Chiefs Are "Begging" To Get Out Of 1st Pick

According to this reporter at SB Nation, the Chiefs are "begging" to get out of the 1st pick in the draft.

April 15th:

"The Kansas City Chiefs earned the top spot in the NFL Draft with their 2-14 record last season, but it seems increasingly likely that they won't be the ones to actually make the first selection: Mike Freeman of CBS writes that the Chiefs are "begging" for the opportunity to move the pick."

"It's no surprise that the Kansas City Chiefs are open to trades for the No. 1 pick. They've already traded for a quarterback in Alex Smith, and the near-consensus best player available, Luke Joeckel, doesn't seem to be inspiring huge amounts of excitement in Kansas City, especially since Branden Albert has been a solid option for them at the position ever since they used their first-round pick on him in 2008. It is a little bit surprising how open they seem to be about it. Andy Reid said the team was open to it all the way back in February, and GM John Dorsey made similar statements a few weeks ago. But that's nothing compared to all the rumors of behind-the-scenes machinations trying to trade the pick. For what it's worth, Dan Kadar of Mocking the Draft said moving the pick was a "dream scenario" when he analyzed the Chiefs' choices in February."

"No team has traded a No. 1 pick since 2004 when the Chargers traded Eli Manning to the Giants, but that was a different scenario, as Manning had publicly stated he wouldn't play for the Chargers. Despite the ultimatum, they were still able to get a good haul for him - the fourth pick in that draft, Phillip Rivers, as well as first and third-round picks in 2005. The Rams were able to get an arm and a leg from the Redskins for the second pick in last year's draft, receiving last year's No. 6 pick and a second-rounder as well as first-round picks in this upcoming draft and in 2014. However, those trades were both for franchise-caliber quarterbacks, something this class has a dearth of."

ESPN Stats & Information has furnished some "Next Level" stats on the top eight prospects -- Smith, Matt Barkley (USC), EJ Manuel (Florida State), Ryan Nassib (Syracuse), Tyler Wilson (Arkansas), Mike Glennon (North Carolina State), Tyler Bray (Tennessee) and Landry Jones (Oklahoma).

• On throws of 20-plus yards downfield, Smith completed only 37.3 percent, sixth among the eight passers.
His receivers' fault, I take it?

For whatever reason, you've been unsuccessfully trying to discredit Geno every chance you get. You've obviously got an agenda.

However, Geno Smith can make passes like these. Geno has an arm that can take the top off of the defense and the accuracy to hit guys in stride in coverage 40-50 yards downfield. Alex Smith can't. Actually, a lot of guys at the QB position in the NFL can't. And that's why Geno is such an intriguing prospect with a huge ceiling. His skill set, work ethic and tools for the position are superb and he's got the chance to become an All-Pro in the right system. That's why a lot of us want the Chiefs to draft him. It's not that he's the best QB in a single draft. It's that he's got a rare skill set that gives him the potential to be a high level performer at the next level and that he's proved that he can do it regularly at the college level over three years of starting in two different systems. He's a freaking great prospect.

Anyone can post highlights of anyone .... Here, here's an Alex Smith 2012 "highlight" video. He's captain checkdown alright. Runs a lot, too.

Those stats are wrong.

Because Geno is God.

That's why.

This is why I hate bland stats. There's no mention of attempts, drops, and other variables.

It could very well end up that Geno isn't the best thrower on 20+ out of this bunch. However, just posting a comp % is lazy.

It'd be interesting to know the % of the best guys in the NFL over 20 yards. I bet it's sub 45%...

someone posted that list on here before and it's worse than 45% from the best guys, because the best guys take more chances downfield, and most of it (I think the Manning sisters) came from trying to attempt comebacks/clutch situations.

You still have to put it in context of the college guys. Tighter windows in the pros.

Also the first team in history to have two Smiths at QB who went number one overall. The media will have a lot of fun with that.

I agree with your last sentence.

However, having watched the games, the primary reason for that stat is the one fact that we have discussed numerous times.

He gets lazy with his mechanics.

Many of his incompletions were due to the fact that he tended to throw off his back foot.

He didn't drive through the balll.

An easily correctable flaw.

Aaron Rodgers was over 60% a year or two back. Peyton Manning with his noodle arm was between 45-50% last year. Alex Smith was 50% in the half season he played.

But the point isn't to compare Geno to anybody else. Or to even say that Geno's bad at throwing the deep ball. 37% isn't some terrible number. He's not Cassel.

The point is that I keep seeing this nonsense about how Geno can hit a receiver between the numbers from 50 yards out, while the receiver is double covered, and Geno's got a blindfold on, or whatever BS I was replying to. And it's not actually backed up by anything but a few handpicked gifs.

Probably 2 years ago. They absolutely raped people on back shoulder throws.

As in, we'll be lucky to see that again.

Kaepernick was #1 at 57% last season.
Alex Smith was actually second, at 47%.
P Manning, Brees, Newton, RG3, Wilson, Rodgers and Ryan were all above 40%.
