Giving Alex the 'Joe Flacco Treatment'

The contract talks between the Chiefs and Alex Smith is our big story right now. Especially with his old squad signing Kaepernick today.. this situation gets more and more interesting. A couple of observations of our team...

Defensively, we are as stacked as we are going to be for a long time this season. Chances are we won't play another season with all the talent we currently have on that side again (Hali older, Houston/Berry/Poe with extensions in the nearer future)

Offensively, if all the OTA talk is real and Alex is really playing as well as they say (and the WR's such as Bowe), we are a solid offensive line from perhaps a top 10 offense.

It's fair to say the 'window' is as wide as it will ever be. With possible big contributions from Kelce, Commings, Knile, and other 1st/2nd year players, we may have a Super Bowl bound squad. Which is what leads me to this though: Let the season play out before signing Alex. If he plays well, a playoff win or two? Sign him for 100 million. If he wins a Super Bowl? Give him whatever he wants and a key to the city. If he and the team bombs? Let him walk and use Murray or Bray, use the money to keep our defensive stars.

This is the right plan, imo. Discuss.

If you told me I could trade the entire Chiefs defensive roster for the Jets, I'm making that trade without even giving it a second thought.

The players I mentioned are more talented than their counterparts on the Jets, but you take all 11 starters and they are more talented as a whole, and have more depth.

Yep. And since this thread is about Alex Smith, we can start with the holes on the OL that will effect his success and that of the team. Way too many for them all to work out because they created new one's where they didn't exist last year. Basically the Chiefs "BIG FA plan" is for all said gaping-hole -players to step up. The OL is plain SCARY in a BAD way. I can't remember a time when there was so much suck potential there. They are top 5 worst on paper right now, or darn near close to that. Alex is really going to earn any $$$ he gets this year.

Guys like Ryan and Hoodie can milk average talent and finish in the top 15 in scoring defense every year.

So far our new DC looks like Gunther II...

If we win the Super Bowl with this schedule and oline they could sign him to a 50 year 1 billion dollar contract and I wouldn't object. I'm afraid that doesn't even have a slim chance of happening.

Disagree.

The Patriots have been a mediocre defense for years.

The Jets were pretty mediocre a couple of years ago.

Bellichick gets credit for figuring things out when mediocre teams get into the red zone.

So through all of this what can we all agree on?

We have a few studs who haven't had any depth or support around them, plus bad coaching. I, like some of you would say about other teams, think our young defensive players can fill that void. I believe in guys like Catapono, Ford, Gaines, Commings, etc. I took time to watch those guys' tape from college and I like them all. If you don't, then yeah we are merely average in your eyes. But if you do like me, then we look pretty damn good.

Rams- Scariest pass rushing front 4 in the league with the addition of Donald.

Saints- Not a lot of names but they're absolutely a better unit with Rob Ryan commanding them and the young combo of Cameron Jordan and Kenny Vaccaro anchoring the team.

Cincy- Stacked, especially their front.

Broncos- Miller dropped back down to his dominant weight, Ware is there now, Ward, Wolfe is back, Knighton still wrecking, And Talib has joined them. They're stacked.

Bills - Williams, Dareus, Hughes, Alonso, Gilmore, etc.

Browns - Should be a dominant unit, they're always good and have a better secondary than us.

Texans- Still have the goods to be absolutely dominant. Watt should have it easier this year with Clowney now in the mix. Scary potential there alone on top of their other talent.

If I had to guess, I would say we end up around 12-16 in total defense this coming season.
Your take on the Cardinals would suggest they have 2-3 good players. We have 5 minimum.

Rams is a projection, especially with Donald.

Most all of those are based on what you think will happen, like me. So who wins? Play the games and we'll see.

The Lambs completely fisting the Colts last year is not a projection. It happened. They trounced them. It was over by half time.

The same Colts team that beat us twice.

And that's the worst team in that NFCW division...

And the Rams got cocksmashed by the Cowboys, that we beat.

Fail. It's the NFL buddy, you don't come to play you get your ass kicked no matter what.

Alex Smith's fortunes will rise and fall with the Oline and the receivers. If he can have success while running for his life and hitting big plays with this crop of receivers, then drop the bank on him and get him some protection and WRs next season. But from the looks of things, he'll go down to injury by week 3. In which case, we get to watch Bray/Murray run for their lives. I would love to see the Alex Smith I saw in the Colts PO game every Sunday , though.
