Browns Starting Campbell

Jason Campbell to start for Browns this week

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 23, 2013, 11:03 AM EDT
Jason Campbell
AP
After hedging for a few days, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski has made a change.

Per Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, Chudzinski announced that quarterback Jason Campbell would start this week in place of Brandon Weeden.

If there was ever any doubt that the Browns were ready to hit reset at the position this offseason, this should clear it up.

Campbell was leapfrogged by Brian Hoyer earlier this season, and if they’re willing to replace Weeden at this point, he’s clearly not part of their future thinking.

Campbell started a game for the Bears in 2012, and has also played some replacement-level football for the Raiders and Redskins.

He’s the 20th Browns starting quarterback since 1999, while he sets the stage for No. 21.

Campbell is a hump. He will look great for a few plays, then throw an INT, or do something else that costs his team.

The Chiefs D is going to have their way with him all day. He's going to go down faster and more often than a bar slut after guzzling a bottle of Southern Comfort.

I think the 2011 Raiders would have easily won the AFC West if Campbell had not been injured. He was having a decent year when he went into that year as the starter.

I could not believe how poorly prepared he was when he played for the Bears last year when Cutler was injured. He played terribly.

I think Campbell could have a good game if the Browns have a good gameplan. But IMO, he accepts losing too easily to achieve to the level of his ability.

I thought it was interesting that Gary Pinkel said before the Florida game that Maty Mauk will always compete and that every great QB has that quality. Campbell does not seem to have that quality of strong competitiveness.

Yep. This is a good move IMO by the Browns. Campbell has experienced the crowd noise and won at Arrowhead before. They know what they don't have in Weeden.

Campbell isn't really a mobile guy and his release is slower than Weeden's

He's harder to tackle
