Ten Things About Today's Game

Ten Things About Today's Game

10. I'm on vacation until November 30th, so I was a total couch slug today. Slept in late with Mrs. Blowfish, didn't do a damn thing around the house because I did all my chores yesterday, and just vegged out and watched football all day long. There's nothing better than laying an ass whooping on a division opponent at their place in front of their fans. This is the first time in 22 years KC has won back to back roadies at San Diego, and today is the worst ass kicking we've put on the Bolts in their stadium since Lenny the Cool beat them 40-3 in 1968. What's more, it was Ladanian Tomlinson Day, a guy who torched the Chiefs many times in his career. And since the Bolts could only manage 52 yards rushing, they should have suited him up. Lots of good stuff today, so let's give credit where credit is due, starting with the offense:

9. Alex was his typical game manager self. He went 20 for 25, no TDs, no picks, sacked three times. But he also ran for 33 yards and didn't do anything stupid. Play calling in the first half was still maddening, like not throwing balls into the end zone in red zone opportunities, but he can only run the plays that Andy sends in. Smith spread the ball to eight different receivers, which is usually a stat that means we win. He also hit some guys in stride, which he has big trouble doing. He hit West out of the backfield early and hit Avant on a nice sideline play. But he also almost got Maclin killed again this week, but all in all, hard to complain when you smoke a team by 30 points in their house. Nice job, Alex.

8. One of the few guys who had a bad game was Kelce. He cost us 7 total points. Hands to the face on the first TD cost us the extra point -and I sure am glad that didn't come back to bite our ass, although I'll bet many of you were thinking "uh-oh...here we go" early on. He dropped a TD catch, which we'll give him a pass on since he got targeted by T'eo -who's one of several dirty players on the Bolts. He dropped a pass in the Red Zone that would have gone for a TD -although Alex put too much mustard on it, and he dropped another 3rd down pass in the second half that would have gone for a first down and more, snuffing a drive. But he did manage to catch five balls, which was everything else thrown at him. It was great to see Poe get a TD. Like John Madden used to say "I love it when a fat guy scores."

7. KC has been amazingly deep with their running backs. We lose Charles, West steps up and plays great. We lose West, Ware steps up and plays great. Ware was just shy of 100 yards rushing and had the two dagger TDs in the second half to put the game away. If West can't go next Sunday against Buffalo, it'll be cold weather Marty Ball at Arrowhead with Ware, Sherman and Knile Davis. I'm not sure what Davis did to get in the dog house. Remember, he scored the go ahead TD vs. Denver in the home opener, before the meltdown. So he has skills, and he can return kicks if DAT is still out Sunday. He could be a serious grinder for us next week.

6. I don't know what else Colquitt can do to make All-Pro. He's had a kick ass year, and has flipped the field countless times. His punts inside the ten have been outstanding, and since he's left footed, his kicks spin funky and are hard to field. The muffed punt in the second half by Herndon was a turning point in the game. I'm a little worried about Santos missing the PAT, but overall he's had a pretty decent season. We've had fewer special teams penalties over the past few games, so Dave Toub is dong a better job coaching his guys up to play smart. Well done Specials, well done.

5. This was a dominant defensive effort on the road, and the D deserves a standing ovation. So, stand up right now, applaud for several minutes, then sit back down. I'll wait..... Great day for Hali with two sacks. He was held probably a half dozen times that weren't called. Great day for Poe. Scores a TD, stuffed the run, chased Phyllis all over the field, and looks like his back is finally getting back to normal. Great day for Houston with a critical pick six to get the TD that the offense was not able to provide. Great game by Eric Berry, who's always been a beast on run support, and stopped a final fourth and one gasp by the Bolts in the fourth quarter. Too bad he couldn't have knocked Stevie Johnson out of the game. He's the douche that cheap shotted Berry in Arrowhead when he played for Buffalo. Somebody needs to crack that little bastard.

4. Speaking of cheap shots, the Bolts did their best Donk impression today with not one, not two, but three helmet to helmet shots, of which only one was penalized. DAT took a blow that knocked him out of the game. Maclin took one that sat him down for a couple series, and Kelce took one on the TD pass he dropped. T'eo and Addae were head hunting, and Addae finally gave himself a concussion when he hit Maclin. Hope there'll be fines, and we'll remember that when they come to Arrowhead in December.

3. You can try to diminish this victory, and say San Diego was "decimated by injuries," but so what? This time of year, everybody has injuries. We're playing without our best player (Charles) and lost our best remaining back (West) and still rolled. Phyllis is a little bitch, and his guys dropped three wide open passes for him, Phyllis missed several other open receivers, and Gates was arguing with him on the sidelines. I love beating Phyllis. We still need to beat him about ten more times to make up for the game he beat us in Arrowhead when Bowe muffed an onside kick and let Phyllis back into the game -which we eventually lost. Luckily, Bowe does not play for KC any more and all the critical drops were by guys wearing powder blue. I will say this, those San Diego Uni's are the coolest. Old school AFL, man.

2. Kudos to Bob Sutton. He dialed up great pressure, stuffed the run, out coached the Bolts in every possible way, and the only points given were on a 52 yard field goal. That's strong. Andy is still maddening in the red zone when he won't throw the ball into the end zone. And please get rid of any pass where the ball is thrown behind the line of scrimmage. Houston's pick six took the pressure off the offense, and Ware wore down the San Diego defense in the fourth quarter as he ground the clock down and pounded that rock.

1. Chiefs even out at 5-5,which is amazing, since they came back from being 1-5 and losing five straight, to winning four straight. Of the remaining schedule, only Buffalo has a winning record, and would be battling the Chiefs for a possible wild card spot. Bills play the Cheatriots on Monday night, so we'll get them at home on a short week next Sunday. Hopefully they'll be beat up. Looks like we won't have to face Flacco in Baltimore either. Too bad Cutler couldn't beat Denver's second stringer (figures...I hate that guy) and the Fade lost to Detroit. So we're actually in pretty good position for the next six games. Things are about to get interesting, which should make December on the CP a hoot. Everybody have a great Turkey Day!

when grubbs is healthy again does he go back into the starting lineup or do you stay with the line that has probably played best this year?

Few things

1. Glad you brought up Colquitt... is he pound for pound the Chiefs best player? Laugh if you want but if Alex Smith Played as well and as consistently as him he'd be Tom Brady level. I actually don't mind we we have to punt.

2. Play Calling: Was my only negative some times still too predictable on 3rd down short and mediums, and also dont use the Shermanator enough running the ball.

3. I would like to see Conley move into the #2 spot I just think he has more potential than Wilson who did have a good but I just feel Conley has more to offer after the catch.

The difference now is we're not just winning, we're beating down teams we should beat.

Early in the year this D was giving up yards and pts to any scrub who could catch a pass. Any QB that lined up under center racked up 2nd half stats.

Can't remember the last time the Chiefs got better as the year went on instead of starting fast and fading late...

Sounds crazy but he helped set everything up.

Punt puts the other team back inside their 10.
Helps out the defense who forces a punt.
Helps out the offense with a short field.

Chiefs are +59 on the season, 5th in the NFL. If the Chiefs get in, they might be favored against the 3 or 4 seed.

Great recap as usual-much better than anything in the KC Star.

My Player of the game.... Tamba Hali

The news of Hali being done was about as close to the reality as a Walter prediction. He seemed rejuvenated by the California sun as had his best game of the year. 2 sacks which set the Chargers back 10 yards at a time. He also had big hits in the running game for demoralizing losses. He faked out King kong Dunlap so bad on a spin move- he was on Rivers as he made his last step on the drop back. Rivers had no time to even set up for a pass. Hali is on his way to second place on the Chiefs sack list-a very well deserve spot for this warrior.

DJ was everywhere-only missing one tackle that didn't hurt us too bad.

Poe and Walker were sitting on Rivers front porch all day like bullies daring Rivers to come out of the house. Gotta love that tone-setting dive into the end zone by Poe to knock the Fridge out of the record books.

I also think the Chargers receivers watched some tape of the Chiefs hard hits on denver and it got into their heads. They seemed to hear footsteps all day, even when they were wide open. A lot of that was because of Comeback Player of the Year-Eric Berry. He was second in tackles behind DJ and awesome in run support. He also made an outstanding open field tackle that saved a big play. In my humble opinion-he is the best Safety in the NFL this year.

Spencer Ware looked like what the Chargers wished they drafted in Gordon. While Melvin pushed his non-TD scoring record for number of carries by a rookie- Ware put 2 TD's to ice the game. Hopefully we will see more of him next week. Props to the Oline for another solid game.

Only grip is Andy calling a negative 3 yard swing pass on 3rd and 3?? I don't understand-it did not fool the Chargers one bit-they have miles of tape of that exact play that has not worked all year. Someone please send Andy a video to show him what a WR Slant looks like. At the very least the WR would be heading to the first down line (we know Alex will throw it short) instead of a negative yard floater.

Another dominating win on the road. This team has turned the corner.

Any steamy details to share? Like Top Ten Things about Today's Positions

9. Alex was his typical game manager self. He went 20 for 25, no TDs, no picks, sacked three times. But he also ran for 33 yards and didn't do anything stupid.
This is sadly his ceiling but not throwing a pick since week 3 isn't a bad thing. He still misses too many throws but that one late throw down the left sidelines between 3 Chargers was a thing of beauty.

8. One of the few guys who had a bad game was Kelce.
I didn't think that hands to the face penalty was as much of a stupid play that he sometimes commits versus just a bad position as he was pushed back.

7. KC has been amazingly deep with their running backs.
Shocking as well.

6. I don't know what else Colquitt can do to make All-Pro. We've had fewer special teams penalties over the past few games, so Dave Toub is dong a better job coaching his guys up to play smart.
Colquitt has to be ALL-PRO this year as the Chargers had to be crying starting the entire game at an average of the 17 yard line. That is NUTS!
The special teams did commit two holding calls on fair catches so I am not going to give them a free pass this week, too many of these each week and has to stop.

5. This was a dominant defensive effort on the road, and the D deserves a standing ovation.

The defense has really come into it's own since Sean Smith came back and that prick cost us at least one or two wins, especially the Bears game. Glad he is back to playing great. Poe also with his back now appearing healed and Tamba Hali gaining strength as the season wears on. Pretty impressive indeed.

4. Speaking of cheap shots, the Bolts did their best Donk impression today with not one, not two, but three helmet to helmet shots, of which only one was penalized.
They led with their helmets all game. Complete bullshit

1. Chiefs even out at 5-5, which is amazing, since they came back from being 1-5 and losing five straight, to winning four straight. Of the remaining schedule, only Buffalo has a winning record.
I certainly am one of the people on this board who has to eat crow and was in the doubters camp when we were at 1-5. I'm very impressed and the fact we are even in the hunt after that horrific start along with the loss of Jamaal Charles, shows Andy Reid is a pretty damn good coach to hold this thing together and move forward in a positive way. Yeah Fat Andy!

Sounds like a broken record but thanks one again GB and enjoy both your vacation and Thanksgiving!
