LNBS: What if Dorsey extends Alex for 3-4 years at backup compensation...

Please read op before voting.

I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

Cap hits by year (projected)

10
13
7
7

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

Let's just face it - Mahomes IS the end of the Alex Smith era in KC. 2017 is Alex's swan song with the Chiefs unless he pulls out a season he's never had before - 4,400 yards and 30+ TD's type of year. If he doesn't, it becomes cheaper to cut than keep him in '18, and he won't want to stick around just to be a backup when he can earn starter pay somewhere else (most likely).

The selection of a first round QB has as much to do with economics (salary cap) as it does with winning a super bowl.

I highly doubt Smith is a Chief come March of 2018.

Ready or not, here comes Mahomes.

Let me say it this way, Mahomes has to flat out suck for Alex to be a Chief in the 2018 season. And fu@k Bray, its time for us to start looking for other backup QBs too, perferably in the draft.

I think some of you are missing that Alex is going to take up 17m in space this year...my totals are 4years at 37m, meaning half of you wouldn't give Alex 3 years for 20 million after this year?

That's silly.

He's worth every penny of that and more.

I think emotion is running some of your decision makers.

That's the narrative according to the Alex fans.

But this team won those games, and would have won all but 3 or 4, or maybe 5 of those games with someone like Matt Moore, or hell, even Chase Daniel starting those games, and I can't rule out the possibility that they would not have won the same number.

So, no, I don't want to pay Alex Smith 7 mil to backup.

There are/will be cheaper, equal options available.
Agree completely.

4 years/$40 million is a ludicrous amount to pay a backup QB, even if Year 1 (as a starter) and Year 2 (as a maybe/part-time starter) account for 2/3 of it.

Cut the total dollars in half, and I might say OK. That's backup pay. But even then, that's a lot to pay for a backup, and it's probably better to rip off the band-aid and remove the temptation from Andy Reid's plate...

I mean, wouldn't it be the most Chiefs move ever for KC to be really good in 2018, have Smith starting the year, get hurt, Mahomes to come in and kill it while leading the team to the top seed in the AFC, only for Smith to be reinserted as the starter when he's healthy?

He's not worth $7 million a year. That's a crazy amount to pay a backup QB, even if he is proclaimed the "best backup in the league."

They'll pay him this year, cut him, bring in some other vet on a quality 2-3 year deal for $10 million total or less, and spend the 4-5 million a year they're saving on more valuable pieces.

All of this.

And like I said, some QB needy team is going to overpay him to come start for them. How many times have we seen that before?

OK, fine. But why would Smith want to be a backup? He's a proven winner. If Mike Glennon is worth 3 years 45M why isn't Smith.

As I alluded to before, we drafted Mahomes because we don't think Alex is worth the money he will demand on a market moving forward.

Plus there will be a market for his services.

Arizona, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Jets, Browns, and Vikings just to name a few. He's going to have options to play.

A big part of having Mahomes is the cost controlled contract for 4-5 years. To keep Alex as a backup would defeat that purpose.

If Mahomes is starting in 2018, you have 3 years of starting QB play at $4-6 million per year. That is the window to use some extra cap room on extra pieces to win the Super Bowl.

This dude will never settle for a backup role. He will retire and go into media work before he spends 3-4 years sitting the bench.

There is literally zero chance he takes a backup role anywhere. He's made his money, if he can't start somewhere he's done.

He threw a fit in San Fran for that reason and he will do the same here when the time comes next year with a year left on his contract, he will want to be traded or cut so he can start somewhere.

Against the Jets we forced 8 turnover two of them went back for touchdowns and yet we came up with a measly 24 points. That bugs the hell out of me for our offense ran by Alex Smith. So I think we would be better off finding another backup that in a game can at least come in and do something.
