May 10, 2011 On any given sunny day in Kansas City, Missouri the streets are sure to be filled with skateboarders. Ollying over fire hydrants, kickflipping expansive gaps and grinding down hand rails most pedestrians exclusively use for holding on to, these skaters take KC’s urban environment and unlock a peculiar potential lying dormant within it, a potential ignored by most. The skater flock truly sees the world as their limitless playground. Skate parks around KC are sparse, few and far between. Especially hard to find around these parts is a good one. Notable mentions are Penn Valley at 31st and Penn near Penn Valley Community College’s campuses (which is still under construction) and Roland Park at 51st and Granada, off the Roe exit from I-35. Most skaters around KC would agree that these parks mainly function as good warm-up spots, but fall short of providing a truly fulfilling day of skating. Footage from these parks can be found at this YouTube channel. KC skate parks lack a certain attitude that its streets afford. Plastic ramps, purposefully placed ledges and prefabricated grind-rails all mean that each time someone skates a park, they skate it the same boring way. Often times skaters will show up to a park and do the same tricks day after day after day. Street skating allows for a more random and improvised session. Finding a good spot to skate in the streets takes an observant breed. It requires a skateboarder’s eye; an eagle eye of sorts that can spot a solid stair set from afar, or an exceptionally perfect rail in passing. But just sniffing these spots out isn’t enough; a good skater has to put his theoretical shredding into practice. Going to a new spot around KC is an exciting expedition for any skater to embark upon. Each has its own curious peccadillos that the skater has to do battle with. Too obtuse or acute of an angle, broken glass bottles, a giant crack in the cement, these are common obstructions. But each spot is made unique by its problems and part of the fun of skating them is finding that perfect comfort zone that works. After that’s accomplished the spot can be destroyed and a new one with entirely different quirks can take its place. Spots around KC not specifically designed for skateboarding have garnered a lot of attention. Even skate videos and magazines put out by the top companies in the business and featuring the best skaters alive contain footage from the Midwest, and specifically KC. The Barney Allis Plaza, whose architecture is like a welcome invitation to skate your heart out, has drawn riders from the west coast to the middle of the map. Other spots include a handrail in the Rivermarket area and a gap to handrail in the heart of downtown where renowned pro Eric Koston pulled a gnarly kickflip back lip. A series of concrete slabs layered one atop another creates a skate paradise in the middle of Gillham Park, another infamous KC spot. While most assume that the West Coast houses all the best boarders in the US, an often-overlooked KC crowd is in heated contention. Coming from a sprawling metropolitan area and growing up skating its concrete jungle, these trained stuntmen are hardened editions of skateboarding’s new generation. Move over Cali, Cowtown is kickflipping its way into the heart of the skate world. |

I really hate bowl games. The only one that matters is the National Championship game. The rest are just for money and lowered expectation school pride. They're a reminder that you're team wasn't good enough this year but let's play another game in reminder of that.
