I've done a little research and it seems CRT gives the best quality with Plasma coming in a close second??? I hear that about prices cut in half ... hope they continue to drop and go down half again by this time next year. |

IMO there is really no clear second best technology if you are also looking at price. The manufacture and build quality are a big factor. The mid to high end plasmas have an excellent picture but it also comes with the high price tag. Many of the lower end plasma sets can look rather mediocre and may not display a true HD signal. A good DLP/LCD (Samsung/Sony) rear projection can look pretty close to mid end plasmas and at a fraction of the cost. They take up more space than plasma but weigh about the same. IMO these offer the best value but it basically comes down to personal preferance and your particular needs. Last edited by Miles; 05-17-2005 at 02:45 AM.. |

Here's a good forum for researching television brands and technologies. The cover everything from CRTs, CRT projection, DLP, Projectors, Plasma, LCD and so on. It's very active (nearly 150,000 members and 5.5 million posts), it was very useful for me when I was researching a big screen purchase recently.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ We ended up buying a Panasonic 50" DLP and I cannot say enough good things about this set. I was about ready to purchase a Samsung until I saw them side-by-side and the Panny clearly had the better picture quality. The viewing angles are the best I've seen in a projection TV.

Well, as promised, here is an update. Installing it was a real bitch. I had to go to the Chiropractor the next day, this thing weighs over 120 lbs. Holding something this expensive over my head gave me a real rush, similar to the time I wired in a new breaker box "hot." I spent most of the first evening trying to hook up my DVD, Direct TV, Comcast Cable, Surround Sound and DVR. In just a short year and a half, they have obsoleted most of the cables I already owned. My wife spent all of the next day making things mostly functional. I have watched it for a few hours now, incredible. The DVD that I watched last night (National Treasure?) was truly like being at a movie. We are still jacking with trying to get everything working and have relented to paying someone to come out tomorrow. This is more than I anticipated by far. Someday soon, I hope it takes it rightful place of just being a TV. |
