It continues....

Yes ENDelt - I'm convinced that it's all my fault.

Yesterday I backed into another contractor's truck at a jobsite. Barely tapped the thing. No damage to mine. $1600 to his.

Today my truck dies at a stoplight and a really pungent odor creeps into the cab. I start it and head to the nearest parking lot....

Open the hood to flames.

Slam hood.

Sprint 1/4 mile to Ace hardware.

Sling open door. "Fire extinguishers."

"Back of the store, sir."

"You're kidding, right?"

Get extinguisher, race out to truck. Pop hood again. Flames haven't spread much yet. Hit flames with powder.

Assess damage. Seems to be confined to the alternator and wiring harness.

Disconnect alternator, fire up the truck, drive home.

Took 'bout an hour to install new alternator and harness tonight. All is well. At least it didn't cost me too much this time. $200 is all.

Still haven't heard back from the bastards who supposedly insured my Yukon in Mexico. They're either waiting until 90 days to respond or they're ignoring me for some other reason. Bastards.

AZ has pretty stiff DUI laws. You get jail time for a first offense. 1 day for a normal, 10 for an extreme (over .15). Second offense is 30 day min. Third offense in five years is a felony... you go spend a few months in the state pen w/ the murderers and rapists and shit.

You can also have a felony DUI if you get a DUI while driving on a suspended license or w/ someone under 15 in the car.
For a guy who claims he isn't teh ghey you sure do buy a lot of tickets to the fanny ****tory...

My blood came back at .059. Now, since the legal limit is .08, one might think I was off scott free. But, in AZ you don't have to have over the legal limit to get a DUI. They have a whole separate charge for BAC over .08.

Since I had a prior back in February of 01, and I refused the breathalyzer, the prosecutor wanted me to pay for *something*.... so, he dropped the DUI, dropped the BAC over .08, dropped the no proof of insurance (I had valid insurance... just had an expired card on me that night), and stuck me with failure to stay in one lane w/ the max fine.

$2500 to the lawyer, almost $500 for the remaining civil offense... and I'm out about $3,000 for the ordeal... on my way *to* the bar. Had every intention of leaving the car there overnight.

Course, since I refused the breathalyzer I'm supposed to lose my license for a year. That hearing is yet to come. If they take my license away, when I get it back I have to get state-mandated fuck-you-in-the-ass insurance (aka, SR-22) for, I believe, a year. So, I'm not nearly out of the woods yet. But, I've avoided my second offense DUI, minimum thirty days in jail, and having a ingnition interlock device installed in my vehicle.
My wife got a dui about 3 weeks before she found out she was pregnant with my son. She was trashed and I was telling her to pull over which she did. Keys on the hood of the car we got out and proceeded to get into a huge argument to which a cop came up on us. First approached me and got me into some kung fu death grip. He finally relented and arrested my wife because supposedly I said she was driving. Pussy ass lawyer didn't even fight it, suckered her into maximum penalty to keep it off her criminal record, not driving record. First offense at anything ever.

Got 1 month suspended, 3 months breathalyzer, weekend at satop, 4 visits to the MADD seminar, $1000 fine and 2 years probation. Every one of these things costs. All in all it was about $5000 including lawyer fees.

Did you know that a Toyota Rav 4's Alternator costs more than an alternator for a Jaguar XK8? Yep.

I found this out last winter on new years eve when my brother in law who was moving from VA back to St Louis decided to quit his job and move and, btw, file for bankruptcy...and his car broke down just before he headed out half way across the country.

A new one from the dealer costs $620...dealer cost is about $520...yeah, five HUNDRED dollars. So I decide that Im going to have to do this myself and go to the local auto parts store and get a 'refurb' for the low low price of $300. As the dude is looking it up and giving me the part, he says, 'Could be worse, you could be changing the alternator or a Jaguar XK8'...and proceeds to look it up...Jaguar's alternator was only $200.

I noticed a dead fly in my root beer, right as I was taking a swig from the bottle. It's probably not as bad as phobia's story, but I just wanted to be part of the storytelling gang.

Thank you for posting. You've just made me feel much better of my own plight. At least I don't have apricot transportation that costs ~$2500 just to park annually.

Have you considered trading in that large truck for a small two-seat roadster? It would hold fewer tools and lumber, but you're much less likely to hit other vehicles.
