Alum BLEED fuggin' Crimson and Blue, when it comes to BB season, baby. I'm serious. "We are fuggin' Family!" as the Sisters Sledge might say, heh. Those early round losses to upstarts suck. They suck bad. But, I'm as certain as I can be....IF Self were to, for whatever reason leave KU, and KU offered the job to Turgeon....he'd be on it faster than flies on shit. Not a doubt in my mind.

IIRC WSU has only lost two coaches to another job in their history. Ralph Miller and Eddie Fogler, but it seems like it comes up every time one of them is doing well.
Has KU ever pulled one of their players back as coach like a fly on shit? |

In another 6-8 years, if Turgeon becomes his own man at WSU...you may have a point. And FTR, WSU is NOT NC. All we'd need to do, is have the Wichita Alumni Chapter sing "Rock Chalk" in his driveway....and he'd be on the turnpike headed to Lawrence within an hour.

The facts are that KU has never pulled a former player back as coach and WSU has only lost two in 81 years. |

I know it's not a "lock;" but as a KU fan and alumn....I'd be willing to put a little money on it, if it were ever really a question. And I don't friggin' "bet" on anything.....

ORANGE PULP Shockers squeeze Syracuse BY PAUL SUELLENTROP The Wichita Eagle Associated Press SYRACUSE, N.Y. - College basketball's No. 1 road show runs on smarts and toughness. College basketball's No. 1 home show did not possess enough of either on Saturday night. No. 17 Wichita State will take its 64-61 victory over No. 15 Syracuse, its $80,000 guarantee check and see how high it can climb in the national rankings with road victories over George Mason, LSU and Syracuse. Top 10? The Shockers looked like it for 35 minutes in front of a season-high crowd of 23,857 at the Carrier Dome. They controlled the game with great passing, defense and a determination to keep the Orange from running and dunking. "They beat our man-to-man and they beat our zone," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "They beat whatever defense we were in for 35 minutes." When Syracuse's desperation three bounced off the top of the backboard at the buzzer, the Shockers celebrated as if they had been there before. Which, of course, they had a week earlier after a win at then-No. 6 LSU. "I don't think we ever thought we were going to lose," WSU coach Mark Turgeon said. The crowd in the Dome thought differently in the final five minutes. WSU (6-0) did not make a basket in the final 6 minutes, 20 seconds. The Shockers went scoreless from the time a goaltending call gave them a 61-44 lead with 6:21 to play until Ryan Martin's free throw made it 62-61 with 1:24 remaining. The Orange (7-1) converted turnovers and missed shots into dunks and easy baskets. The Shockers, trying to protect the lead, backed off with around six minutes to play, a decision Turgeon regretted. Then they panicked, and the Syracuse highlight show started. "I told the kids we won despite coaching," Turgeon said. "We should have kept attacking. You don't stop, you just don't stop until the three-minute mark, the two-minute mark." Darryl Watkins tied it at 61-all with 1:51 remaining after the taller, stronger Orange rebounded a series of misses under the basket, a sequence that defined the athletic difference between the teams. "We were just thinking, 'Stay together,' " WSU junior P.J. Couisnard. "I don't think anybody thought the game was in jeopardy." It was, of course. The Shockers then made a series of defensive stops that left Boeheim wanting a few more friendly whistles. WSU led 62-61 when Syracuse's Demetris Nichols went up for a long jumper and Couisnard made contact. No call. The ball went straight up and WSU's Ryan Martin grabbed it. Boeheim ran onto the court, suit coat flapping, to protest the lack of a call. Nichols stole Matt Braeuer's crosscourt pass near halfcourt and steamed for what looked like a certain dunk for the lead. Dome fans readied to celebrate an improbable rally. Braeuer didn't mope. He hustled downcourt and ran at Nichols in the lane. Nichols flinched, lost control of the ball and missed the layup. Couisnard grabbed the rebound. "We turn the ball over and a guy's going in to give them a one-point lead," Turgeon said. "Matt Braeuer doesn't quit. He sprints. That's kind of the nature of our team. We do whatever it takes." WSU's Kyle Wilson, who led all scorers with 17 points, was fouled and made two free throws with 13.2 seconds remaining for a 64-61 lead. Boeheim put in his shooters, determined to go for the tie. WSU blanketed the shooters, switching on screens. The Orange could not get open until Eric Devendorf tried to shoot from the wing with four seconds to play. Couisnard timed his jump perfectly and blocked the shot. Boeheim wanted a foul on that play, as well. Couisnard said he didn't touch Devendorf. He wasn't worried about fouling. He wanted to make a play. "In a situation like that, if you're being passive, then bad things happen," he said. "When he came off the switch, I didn't know exactly how much time was left, but I knew he had to get a shot up quick." It went out of bounds with less than a second to play. Syracuse's Andy Rautins threw up a no-hoper that hit the top of the backboard and bounced away. The Orange, who won't leave New York until Jan. 7, walked off a loser in the Dome for the first time in six games this season. Boeheim didn't sound surprised, especially after he watched the Shockers go on a 27-1 run in the first half. Syracuse took bad shots, looked uninspired on defense and waited until too late to turn it on. "When you play good teams, and Wichita State is a very good team, you have to play from the beginning," Boeheim said. "We haven't learned that yet this year. When you're doing that most of the time, it's going to be a problem." A problem the Shockers happily capitalized on. Their stretch of four straight Saturdays on the road looked like a success after the first two wins. Now, after three wins, it looks like the biggest story in college basketball, and Preseason NIT champion Butler is the only team with an argument. |
