GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) - Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.

The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs' owner.

The pit bulls also killed a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

"The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor's house, came in and was attacked by the dogs," Troyer said.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance.

Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Troyer said.

The dogs were taken to a Humane Society and will probably be destroyed, he said.

It was not immediately known why the dogs entered the house, whether the woman had dogs of her own or what set off the attack.

I disagree. This breed of dog has larger jaws, sharper teeth and more muscularity than any other breed that I can think of. Maybe you could think of one. On top of that, even as a puppy this dog wants to fight. Ever play with a puppy pit bull? They play to win, bubba.

Yes, I believe, the owner ultimately can overcome a pit bull's overly determined nature but it takes a very patient and equally determined person. Anyone less than that stands to own a more dangerous dog than any other breed. It doesn't take much to make a pit bull mean. They are useless animals in my opinion. But breeding them to fight each other is despicable. I think any one that owns a pit bull is an idiot and probably owns it for all the wrong reasons. Status, ego, show-off, thinking it makes them a tough guy... stuff like that. Their just asking for trouble.

hmm... people bitchin about dogfighting. then dogs with the same name bite people and they bitch some more.

which is worse?
maybe you should legalize dogfighting, you would not have this problem if you did. plus I'm sure you'd rather have these demon dogs tearing each other up instead of the neighborhood children.

Hmm... interesting take. Sort of like teaching all the jerkoff gangbangers to shoot properly, so they'll off each other during a gunfight instead of the obligatory honor student.

Another thought, why own a pit bull? You know their reputation. You know what kind of animal it is, so why own one? You could have any other kind of dog. Why a pit bull? Things that make me go ...hmmmm...
