Is Allen worth it?
Jared Allen’s place in NFL (financial) history
April 23rd, 2008 – 7:57 AM by Kevin Seifert Based on some very preliminary research this morning, it appears that new Vikings DE Jared Allen is the NFL’s third-highest paid active player and the fourth-highest in league history. If you use guaranteed money as a benchmark, then there are only two players whose contracts guarantee more than the $31,000,0069 in Allen’s deal. Both of them are quarterbacks: Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, whose recent contract extension guarantees him $36 million, and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, who was guaranteed $34.5 million in 2004. The NFL record, we believe, is the $37 million the Atlanta Falcons guaranteed QB Michael Vick in 2005. http://ww3.startribune.com/vikingsblog/ He is now the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, according to them. |

Some of us would have preferred to see the Chiefs work out a long term contract with JA, but the assumption has to be that that option wasn't viable. Given the need to maximize his trade value, I think the Chiefs did alright. I'd rather be on the Chiefs side of this trade than Minnesotas.

TG was NFL radio. He said he has to trust the front office but he was talking about only going two more years and he wants to win now. I do think he will look at the end of the season to see where the team stands. In the meantime he is going to shepherd the newcomers and thinks it is the line that needs to be address. He is ok with Ryan being selected, but doesn't think that helps him to win now.

This team isn't a DE away from being a contender. The Chiefs, before this trade, should have been going into this draft with the idea of selecting the BPA with positional value and need as a consideration when choosing between players that they have rated similiarly. That shoudn't change now.

Jared Allen's six-year contract is worth $73.26 million and includes $38.4 million in the first three years. The originally reported $31 million guaranteed is correct. Allen is a truly dominant player and should be even moreso next to the Williamses in Minnesota, but this is still a massive risk because of his off-field history. The deal will likely only be a success if he stays out of trouble. |

He's not worth that paycheck, and not worth what the Chiefs got for him, IMO.
The Chiefs screwed the Vikes. Qualification: Anything or anyone is worth exactly what a buyer is willing to pay, so by that measure alone Mr. Allen is "worth" exactly what was traded and what is paid. |

Jared Allen is due an $8 million roster bonus in 2010 per the six-year, $72.36 million contract he signed with the Vikings. The bonus is guaranteed for injury only. It protects Minnesota in case Allen gets in trouble with the law again. Allen's signing bonus is $15.5 million. His base salaries are: $750,000 (2008), $7.75 million (2009), $6.38 million (2010), $8,979,438 (2011), $11,619,850 (2012), and $14,280,612 (2013). |
