In general, are NFL players more athletic than NBA players?

Hootie seems to think Kobe Bryant is stronger than all the cornerbacks and safeties in the NFL, and that LeBron James would be the best NFL player of all time if he played the game. You know, because guys like Tracy McGrady and Stephon Marbury would just dominate as a WR in the NFL. Nobody could cover them.

depends on how you define athlete

both sports use a specific athletic skill set that would leave the player a fish out of water in the other sport.

Lebron james probably wouldn't survive a half season in the NFL

most NFL players are far too muscle bound to keep up at a professional level in the NBA

I'm done arguing with you. LBJ is a great athlete, no doubt about it. I doubt he would be the most athletic guy in the NFL though. He very well may be on the upper echelon, but I don't see how you can unequivocally know that he is by watching him play against people that are not as talented as he is. I would bet that if there was an athletic competition, Calvin Johnson would be a better athlete than LeBron.

To say that LBJ would dominate in the NFL is ludicrous. You cannot know for sure, and he plays basketball without pads. Some people seem to think if you are really athletic you would play basketball, and not football. While that may be true, not everybody can get the acquired skill to be good at basketball. I can tell you this, the most athletic guys at my high school were football players, and not basketball players. They tried to play basketball but just couldn't hit shots or didn't have the fundamentals. In football you can get away with your sheer athletic talent for a long time, in basketball you see countless nonathletic dudes playing D1 hoops though.
You kind of contradicted yourself here. The best athletes were football players, yet they couldn't shot a basketball through a hoop without anybody guarding them. And they didn't have the fundamentals to run/cut AND dribble a basketball? If NFL athletes are so much better, why did Antonio Gates not get drafted into the NBA, but now plays in the NFL after never playing a down in college football? Surely, that can prove a point. Because for me, Tight Ends/D-Ends are the best athletes in football. Tony Gonzalez didn't get a sniff at an NBA career, nor did Julius Peppers and they are quite the playmakers in the NFL.

The basketball people keep going to a once in a generational player in LeBron James.

If you start measuring things like speed, strength, on the general population, it's not going to be close.

I would say that T.O. is one of the more freakish athletes in the NFL..he may have lost a bit over the past 3-4 years, but even he tried playing basketball and he couldn't do anything on the court. All I'm saying is football players who go to a court don't fare so well, but there HAVE been instances of basketball players going to a football field and enjoying success.

Basketball involves a lot of skills that take years to develop, no doubt. To evaluate athleticism you need to use a measurement system that doesn't give an advantage to someone that has spent thousands and thousands of hours developing those skills.

What does that have to do with their athletic talent? There are a ton of freak athletes that can't play in the NBA. Like I said, in the NBA there is alot of acquired skill. Passing, shooting, individual moves, ability to position yourself, moving without the ball, etc. Not that there isn't acquired talent in football either, I just feel there is more in NBA and that athletic talent is a bigger deal in MOST positions in the NFL than NBA.
