What does everyone think of supporter powers?

To add some background supporters pay $10 a month and they get the ability to issue infractions or warnings and if the person gets enough of infractions he gets temp ban for a day or 2.

Some of the people in DC are upset that shtsprayer got temp banned because of some comments he made and believe that supporter powers are too strong.

On the flip side DaFace made a good point yesterday that if it wasn't for the few of us supporters Malboro Chief would have posted a ton of porn yesterday but we were able to ban him almost immediately.

So what does everyone think? Good idea, bad idea?

I haven't read anything that he has posted that I would find racist or probably more accurately it hasn't caught my attention.

I will go do a search though just to find out.

I thought they were called "hall monitor" powers.

Relying on actual moderators to ban people posting porn has never been a big issue in the past.

I think it's great that people are donating to ChiefsPlanet. I don't mind those people getting some fringe benefits in return. I think it's a bad idea to have a policy that any yahoo can buy a slice of moderator power, though. There are several people around here who shouldn't be anywhere near the ban button. If we need more people with the ability to flag posts as offensive because our moderators are stretched too thin, then they ought to be selected with an eye toward their temperament and judgment.

One of the big attractions of ChiefsPlanet over other Chiefs message boards or other message boards in general (especially corporate sponsored boards) is the fact that it is lightly moderated. This place is like the wild west of message boards and I think that's a good thing. The lighter the moderation the better, IMO.

I get the vibe from DaFace that if anyone abuses these powers, they can have them taken away quite easily.

I've also gotten the vibe from him that they are helping out the mods in a good way. I don't think anyone has abused them yet.

Power should lie solely in the hands of the Administrator. Mods should police, report the offenses, and let Admin. have the final say.

Giving members discretionary powers for the price of a pizza is just plain stupid.

I searched his posts from the last 6 months in DC and he has only had 13 posts over there. Nothing objectionable that I could find.

I think that is a very very fair take pat and one that is hard to argue against.

The hall monitors will let you know whether something is funny or not. Of course it will probably depend on whether they think of you as a buddy or, alternatively, they have a grudge against you.

Just an fyi, no one (besides mods) has the power to ban... the worst a "supporter" can do is give an infraction... it takes FIVE of those to earn a temp (2 day) ban.

If 5 lead to a nearly automatic ban than that's still a problem AFAIC. What SHTSPRAYER was banned for yesterday was a joke compared to other things that are posted on this board with some regularity. He repeated race-related terminology that has been used in and reported by the mainstream media to refer to Obama. For example, the LATimes editorial board didn't consider "Magic Negro" to be unacceptable terminology, and in fact it was used by a mixed race op-ed writer. While he used it to criticize other posters in a fairly vulgar way, that vulgarity was relatively tame by ChiefsPlanet standards.

If someone gets so many infractions, they probably deserved it. If not, a mod can reverse it.
