? for handgun guys.

Opinions of Taurus Model 617 double action, 7 shot revolver, .357 Mag, 2.25” barrel for my CCW.
Alternate Taurus Model 444 double action, 6 shot revolver, 44 Mag, 3” barrel but this is a little more gun than I’d really want for CCW.

We were shooting an old water well pump tank, and the .45 cal pistol was the only one that would penetrate it. Not the Beretta, not the glock .40, not the .357, or any of the other weapons(pistols) we we're firing. The.45 cal model Ruger like the one in this thred was not only going through the front, which no other pistol did, it was blowing shredded holes out of the back, the size of a silver dollar. That gun would blow 5 lbs off a man behind a car door.
what kinda ammo you using? (180 grain, +P?) that makes a big difference...45 is fat and slow, 40 is fast and heavy, 9mm is fastest and lightest

I'm not too worried about long range, and I'm not worried about capacity. I'm not carrying to get into a shoot out, and if I'm shooting at someone over 30 yards away or spraying the target it's harder to call self defense.
Think about the mall/school shootings of late and you may want to rethink some of that statement when you find yourself protecting not only your loved ones but innocent bystanders from a deranged lunatic

That might be the difference between a .45 Long Colt and a .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol).
I shot an old junk TV straight in the picture tube with a .45 ACP using JHP's and it didn't come out the back side. I found the bullet sitting in the bottom of the TV housing with the shattered remains of the picture tube.
Also an ACP has limited range because it's a big, heavy bullet thats moving slow, only 810 fps. If you were shooting at something 50 yards away, it probably wasn't with an ACP.

I'm not a small guy. I'm no Bill Braski but still, and the handle of smaller revolvers can get lost in my hand. I highly prefer a handle that fills my hand so I can get a solid grip on it, particularly if I'm shooting a magnum.
Plus Glaser also makes their Safety Bullets for a .44 Magnum. Same plan as I discribed with the .357 Magnum, bigger bang.
I've also kicked around the idea of getting a revolver in .40 S&W or .45 ACP callibers. I think either one would be a fine self defender, I'm planning .357 Magnum mostly because of the versatility.

That may not be a bad plan, with the price of ammo going through the roof. At least you can run a .38 round through it.

Maybe.
I still think my plan of attack would cover most situations I'm likely to run across.

I wish I could tell you. The last 3 sporting goods shops I have to, were out. I do have about 200 rounds from before though, so I am in no danger of running out for the time being.

It really depends on how you CCW. For me to carry all the time I want something that I don't even know is there (which is why I carry a S&W Airweight .38 special with hip grips). It's like my Amex card, I don't leave home without it. The same gun with Pachymar grips works fine for bigger hands, but will need a holster of some sort.

A .357 would be a fine CCW gun, perfectly controllable with the right load, and nice stopping power. I'm a fan of revolvers for "combat" situations, much less to go wrong.

Now don't get me wrong, if I was delivering $10k in cash to the ghetto, I'd be carrying my Beretta .45.

I also have a small Daewoo DP-51c 9mm that holds 12 rounds that is a dream to shoot and would make a fine CCW auto. It's a shame they didn't catch on, my Daewoo is one of my favorite handguns I have. It was pretty inexpensive, and has awesome quality and features. I bought mine from a local Sheriffs deputy, he carried it for backup for a bout 3 years until the department bought them all compact Glocks for backup. He said about half the department was carrying the Daewoo as backup when they had to buy their own, because of the quality and the fact their S&W full-size magazines from their service weapon would fit them. I bought it from him for $200. I tried carrying it for a while, but once you get 13 rounds of 9mm in there, it's pretty heavy and annoying.

Here is a link on the Daewoo (I'm quite fond of it):

That P90 is pretty much indestructible, but it's big and meant to be carried 'out' on a belt. It's big enough I wouldn't try to conceal one. If you want a Ruger .45acp to carry concealed, look at their 345 model. I have one, nice pistol and sized a lot more sensibly to carry. Has a few foibles - don't dry fire it without a magazine in, for instance.

Good! If I lived in griz country, a fistful of hardcast 10mm would make me a whole lot happier on the trail.
