For years I've posted my 10 favorite albums of the year on this very subforum. 2009 was such a strong year in music that I thought I'd expand my list by 15 entries. Plus, I'll be adding YouTube embeds to a good song (not necessarily representative) from each album. So bear with me as I add each entry. Character limits and all.

Brand New's new album 'Daisy' is very, very solid. I definitely enjoy the direction they've taken. I love this ****ing song.

How does Dream Theater's Black Clouds & Silver Linings not make the list?

I would also add Dredg's The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion.

Because I like these albums more. Because I'm not a big fan of post-Moore Dream Theater. Etc. BC&SL was good though.

It was written in late 1980s. Bloom's a cultural critic and not too happy with the current culture. One aspect: rock music. Says it's childish. Looks at the Rolling Stones. Says music today is all about childish desires. We should be listening to classical music, because it raises us up to greatness. Music today though, keeps us at our current primitive state. Too much sex and instant satisfaction, primarily.

Bloom was an English professor. Very conservative in a way, closet gay, and his attacks are worth paying attention to. Best friend was Saul Bellow.

Sounds like Bloom only paid attention to pop/rock radio; he couldn't level that criticism with a straight face if he was aware of what artistic statements the punk, metal and hiphop scenes were turning out.

He didn't. He just looked at the most popular stuff in the past 1-2 decades. Most specifically, the Rolling Stones. He must have felt that by looking at the most popular bands, he could give a hasty generalization about cultural scene. I think it's reasonable.

I don't like the Stones so I don't really want to defend them. Classical music should absolutely be listened to by more people and with greater frequency.

That said, I don't find anything wrong with songs about sex. We're sexual creatures, us humans. To deny that seems damaging, especially in art where the honesty of portrayals of the human condition is of import.

Wouldn't you agree that there are different levels of viewing sex artistically, whether through songs or film or painting? Would you agree that most pop music today cheapens sex or no? I don't think Bloom would say a song about sex is bad. But I think he would say the songs about sex today are bad.

Yeah, I'm with you for the most part. Most bad pop songs today are about sex and they do cheapen any semblance of humanity associated with it. There are also excellent, poignant songs about sex (some of them blatant pop songs -- see Lady Gaga) today as well. Bloom certainly has a valid point but I find that he paints with too broad a brush.

Since a lot of classical music is lyric-less, how do we know it raises us up to greatness? I always assumed it was about debauchery, medieval-style.
