For the record I am interested in hearing more about the boxers. Those who have them tell me what I should know.

I think that last line must have some truth. Used to spend a lot of time on boxerworld forums and the consensus there was that, while not as high as your figure, 1 in 5 white boxers(if memory serves) are deaf.

Now that being said they have a tendancy to be hyper as hell until about age 4-5. If you give them plenty of exercise you won't have any problems. If they don't get enough - they will find ways to burn energy usually by digging holes or destroying your shit. My first one had some problems health wise. He was allergic to everything and had some gastrointestinal problems after eating a stick as a pup and having to have surgery to remove it. Chas has been healthy as can be. I've had him for 5 years now and no major issues, same can be said for my parents and my wife's parents dogs.

They have been dubbed the clowns of the canine family. Some people say they are dumb but I disagree. If you met my male, you would not think he is dumb. Although I believe he thinks that he is a gazelle. They very lovable companions and great with kids. Mine put up with quite a bit from my little girl. Remember Elmira from Tiny Toons? That's my little girl. But the dogs are very loyal to her and all of my family. While they are not considered guard dog types, I think they make great alarms. I have had strange people come to my door twice in the past year for BS reasons and I knew that they were just casing the houses in the neighborhood. My male wanted to jump through the glass storm door to get them. I'm certain that made them think twice about messing with my house. My male is around 80lbs, btw. Anything else you wanna know?

Oh and a couple more things. Boxers tend to have gas. And sometimes it is room clearing type gas.
And their jowls can be an issue if you don't like slobber. Mine aren't that bad most of the time but if you are eating, they tend to turn on like a faucet. And when my male drinks some water, there is usually a trail from his bowl for several feet as he walks away.

Thanks. He's a great dog. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and nothing they can do to him upsets him. I don't think I have ever heard him growl. He does bark occasionally but mostly he's very quiet. He's really a loving and gentle dog. I never had to train him to stay with me when we're outside. He just naturally does it. If he ever goes out of my sight I just call his name and he comes running. It's great to not have to keep him on a leash.
Couple things to know about English Bulldogs. For a dog of their height they are very powerful and solidly built. Bender weighs 60 pounds and has zero fat on him. He's a little tank. He has taken out my kids and my wife a few times by running into them. He'd rather go through you than around you. I had to have Cherry Eye removed from both eyes in the first year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_eye He also had a fast growing mass on his back that I was really concerned was Mast Cell Cancer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastocytoma Luckily it was removed and found to be a non-cancerous cyst. Bulldogs are prone to both of those things. Bulldogs have a VERY active digestive system. His gas is audible and can clear a room. Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat and overheat very easily. We live in Virginia and keep ours inside on very hot days. When he's outside in the Summer we keep a small kiddie pool filled for him. When he gets hot he goes and lays in it to cool off. Also be mindful that Bulldogs are physically unable to swim. If you decide to spend the money (I know it's a lot but I feel like it was totally worth every penny) know you're getting a great breed but you'll have to put up with some potential health problems. Again, we bought ours from Caddo Valley Bulldogs and couldn't be happier with them and our pet. They answered every question and concern and have been there for us even after the sale. http://caddovalley.com/ Hope this helps in your decision. |
