Your Facebook posts, and your boss.

I just got off the phone with a coworker who was told earlier today that she was about this close to getting fired for trash talking on her employer -- not her boss, but the company -- on Facebook.

Some of the things she said were generally critical, revealed nothing that was private (she was bitching about public information about the financial mess of the company she works at).

She was harrassed about it by her boss at work the next week after the postings (she had posted about the issues several times), and was told today in a frank conversation that they considered firing her over it, but chose not to.

She asked me if she'd have a legal case to sue her employer after being fired for antagonistic, but not privacy-violating, Facebook posting about her job. I'm not a lawyer, I have no idea.

Thoughts?

Well, happy advance 40th birthday, Dallas Chief. It sounds like it's a-comin' soon.

I have Facebook, and a job, and never the twain shall meet. I leave my settings on Friends Only, and there is no chance that I am friending my boss or any of the local snitches, or anyone who is close to the local snitches, or basically anyone.

Plus, if I want to bad-mouth (err, criticize) my company, I certainly won't do it in print. Even if it's not illegal, any company will use that get rid of you for 'breaking company policy' if they just don't like you, and after hearing what I'd have to say, they wouldn't like me any more.

Thirdly, the administrators have morale just as low as mine, so in my case it won't matter. Speaking in generalities, though, you've got to be mindful of the potential pitfalls from Facebook and make sure they don't give your career the smackdown.

I'm on Ambien right now. Can you tell?

This. If you want to "friend" people at your work, use the security features to control what they can/can't see. It's pretty simple.

People are fired every day for stupid things, including things they publicly say about co-workers, their boss, or their employer.

They could have fired her and there isn't shit she could do about it as it should be.

I was the bad guy earlier this year, because I intervened and told a couple of young elementary school teachers it was stupid of them to have photos of themselves at a Dildo sales party on Fb....potential employers and parents see that shit....a friend ofa friend and a couple of clicks is all it takes to ruin their day. I assume they'll understand someday.

For example, a Facebook user might post this on their status:

"I just got off my super long 4 hour shift slinging tacos at On The Border. I'm off to the pool for some drinks, then some Jersey Shore. We'll be at (insert trashy bar name here) tonight, so if you want to go, give me a call!"

Also, Facebook is a tool used by females and effeminate males to stalk exes and create drama.

Originally Facebook was for college students only, but after a few years anyone with an email address was allowed. Facebook officially jumped the shark when old people discovered Facebook and started posting endless pictures and comments of their grandchildren.

Don't forget the assembly line of motivational quotes followed by a slew of "You go girl" responses, supplemented with the "God wouldn't give me more than I can handle, would He?" threads.

Well best of luck to you then! I just made the conscious choice last year to limit the extent of my social networking to text messages and/or emails., Oh and CP! And if you are someone that I am really close to, you might even get a phone call every now and then. At this point in my life, knowing what some dude I went to grade school with had for lunch is not on my list of priorities. To each their own I guess...

Ha! You guys will love this. A couple months ago the president of our company walked into my office & told me to friend him on fb so he could send me some stuff. He had everyone become a fan of our company's fb page and pimp it out to all of our friends. He told me I could "unfriend" him if I wanted, but that seemed like a pretty dickhead thing to do. The security settings allow me to easily control what work people are able to see on there. Just be smart about what you're doing. No problems at all....

Well this is not a problem for folks such as you and myself, but younger females, such as the one in the original post, have major issues with this.

Along time ago a wise old gangster explained to me that "friends is friends & business is business". Told me this right after he canned me.

One of the best lessons i ever learned.
