Chiefs sign practice squad

NFL Roster Cuts: Chiefs Quickly Establish 8-Man Practice Squad

The Kansas City Chiefs released 13 players over the weekend but announced on Sunday that eight of those players would be returning to the practice squad.

Here's the list of the Chiefs first practice squad:
  • NT Garrett Brown
  • DE Dion Gales
  • RT Bobby Greenwood
  • G Darryl Harris
  • QB Tyler Palko
  • DB Ricky Price
  • WR Verran Tucker
  • LB Pierre Walters
I'm not too surprised at any of these. Palko woud be one quick transaction away if Matt Cassel went down.

What do you think of the practice squad? About what you expected?

If he had dumped Magee, Jackson and Cassel, I'd agree.

But he hasn't.

Yet.

The higher the pick, the longer the leash, I guess.

I wish I had been wrong. Or at least, I wish someone had paid me $5 million a year in 2009 to be right.

If Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee continue to tread water, it will set this franchise back even further because they'll need at least two more 3-4, 5 tech defensive ends before truly being able to compete, along with at least one inside linebacker and a QB.

More to the point, the Chiefs will need the same exact players in 2011 as they drafted/traded for in 2009.

It could've been worse. At least we didn't trade a 1st round pick to take a player that was cut a year later. Granted, our first rounders haven't exactly been lighting it up lately.

Which, no offense, negates your earlier thoughts.

The Chiefs have too much money invested in TyJack and Cassel than to just cut them after one year (that would be $30 million out the door with minimal to no return on investment).

I guess they'd rather shell out another $30 million before determining their fate.

If you're disappointed because he didn't dump starters on cutdown day, then I'd say you're just looking to be disappointed. Magee's another story, although it looked like he may have gotten the "you're expendable" message judging by the way he played against the Packers. I'm thinking somebody straight out told him "show something or you're gone".

There's still some conjecture that Jackson maybe needs to get that message, too, but I can't say either way on that.

As far as Cassel goes, the problem with cutting him now is that he was the only first string QB throughout the offseason and preseason it would leave Croyle as the only QB on the roster. If they were going to make that move, it needed to be done in March, not now.

This.

The only good moves Pioli has made other than the Thomas Jones signing have been SUCH gimmes. Cutting Mike Brown, signing Lilja (representing offensive line help), Chambers, drafting Eric Berry, etc. These are all moves 99.9% of the tards here on Chiefsplanet would have made. They're so obvious. No amount of NFL experience was necessary to make these choices.

People said, "PIOLI IS REDEEMED" with the home run pick of Berry. Uhh... no, not really. Scott Pioli wouldn't have been able to show his face at an NFL executive meeting without others pointing and laughing at him if he didn't pick. Hell, he's made so many goddamn mistakes that he probably wanted to take some asshole like Okung but instead drafted Berry out of fear.

I will give him credit. His personal connections did land us two pretty damn good coordinators. All of his other moves have been dogshit.

My post was contradictory to Rad's, not a realistic depiction of events.

There are some here that think Cassel won't be cut in 2011, regardless of his 2010 performance because that would mean Pioli admitting defeat. I'm not to condemn him at this point but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

But IMO, there is no reason why Magee should be on the squad. None.

I'm with you on that one. I think if Cassel plays poorly to the point that it costs the team victories, he's gone. What I worry about (and what I expect to see) is what happens when Cassel has an average year that doesn't either significantly hamper or enhance the team's performance.

he could - and should - easily put up an 80 QB rating with Weis' dink and dunk...

which would probably mean we keep him for 4 years

and all the pats fans, pioli zombies, and pawnsmokers spend two more years celebrating the time we're wasting on a fraud...

and then we start all over again in 2012

i honestly believe this is the most probable series of events...and it makes me want to kill all the candy and sunshine in the world

I honestly think Pioli is stealin' the Hunt's money. That draft last year set the franchise back as much as any of CP's. Don't look now but I think the Lions are closer to building a consistent winner than our Chiefs.

Ain't gonna happen, but I wouldn't bitch if it did. TRich's departure was symbolic - the team hasn't been competitive since he left.
