I work at a power plant right on the banks of the Missouri and the water has risen about 15 ft or so since the start of this. Were sandbagging everything. The plant sits on low level wetlands so were already in panic mode. The level currently is at about 776, our plant floods at 782. It's rising so fast that you can see the change from when you go in in the morning to when you leave at night. Just over night the level rose 8-10 inches.

Eye-opening pictures. I'm no engineer but they say it will be August before the water recedes. Would that compromise the concrete on the portions on I-29 that are underwater to the point that it would need to be replaced?

Yup, been replacing copper and fiber lines for the last month to keep communications up in Montana. Complete pole lines have ended up in creeks that now look like rivers. Banks have eroded and taken the buried cable down stream. I already have more OT than I did in 2009 and 2010 combined.
As has been mentioned, it's still coming. The snowpack that usually gradually melts from April to June/July is going to be all coming within a months time. |

The local news radio station I listen to is now mentioning the flooding in Minot. Still not a peep about Omaha.
I don't get it. |

I'm not trying to downplay the severity of the situation by any means, but there's not really anything "newsworthy" regarding it. Everyone knew it was coming and had time to prepare.

I get what your saying but having a few weeks notice isn't really much for businesses.

hearing some rumors now that Gavin's point dam may be vibrating and some officials are worried about the integrity of the structure. Just a rumor but that would make a serious mess.

Everyone affected should scream that everyone else in the country "owes them", and continue whining about how everyone "owes them" for at least 5 years.

So a natural disaster causing millions (thats conservative) dollars of damage to residents and businesses isn't newsworthy? What the hell should be on the news then?

Having this on the local or national news does get the word out to people willing to volunteer that maybe would not have known otherwise.

....... Okay, risk has subsided. Maybe it's just the regions involved. It happens every couple of years that some kind of massive catastrophe will hit the midwest and yet we tend to fend for ourselves and get things done without guilt tripping the federal government (or the rest of the country, for that matter). I may retire somewhere else some day, but there's no place in the country I'd raise a kid apart from the midwest. We still do things right.
