Gabbert going down bust avenue

So far, Gabbert doesn’t look ready for a leap

Posted by Evan Silva on August 1, 2012, 9:24 AM EDT

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reeling, and increasingly injured. And the new head coach has never even met the best player on the team. To be kind, the Jaguars’ season is off to a dysfunctional start.

There is a quick fix for all of this, though, and we’ve alluded to it before. And conveniently, the guy who can do it is already on the roster. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert can elevate the Jaguars’ 2012 performance if he takes a big leap in year two of his NFL career. Gabbert is the key to Jacksonville’s season.

According to ESPN.com AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky, however, Gabbert’s practice-field performance suggests he is not ready for that sophomore leap.

Kuharsky was in attendance for Tuesday’s practice, and wrote that Gabbert “didn’t look like a guy who’s made the big jump.” While Kuharsky guessed that Gabbert’s footwork has improved, the quarterback’s lingering accuracy woes were more noticeable.

“You watch it and don’t understand how it still happens,” Kuharsky wrote. “… I didn’t come away from this morning session feeling like he was much more effective than the last time I saw him.”

Accuracy and an utter lack of pocket composure were Gabbert’s primary downfalls during one of the worst rookie seasons by a quarterback in league history. It doesn’t sound like he’s corrected the accuracy flaw. We’ll know in Week One whether he’s overcome the pocket fear.

The Jaguars face Jared Allen’s Vikings in the season opener.

It will be interesting - assuming this franchise ever decides to select a QB in the 1st round - if this fanbase will give up on him after a poor rookie season.

I'm not saying the kid is going to be great, but he's starting his second year, with the least talented team in the NFL.

Too many people here expect young QB's to be world-beaters immediately.

Yes that was actually by design. They wanted to see how he'd do under pressure, which he failed horribly. I remember when these "analysts" were talking about Tebow they were saying 80% of snaps are under duress and if you can't handle the pressure then you won't make it as an NFL QB. I suppose there is some truth to that.

No one is asking Gabbert to be a World Beater. Just be competent at least and give their fan base some hope.

A QB either has it or doesn't.

Do you hear about Andy Dalton putting up those paltry numbers? Jake Locker? What about the first year QB's? Luck? RGIII?

You dont need a ton of talent around you to complete more than 1 pass.

He reminds me of Quinn.

Has all the talent in the world.

He'll probably end up in Buffalo in a year...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

61% in a college spread offense is not impressive. Daniel, for example, completed 68%.

Jags should have pulled the trigger on the Tebow trade. Their best asset is MJD, and a running QB helps a RB's YPC.

There's a pretty big difference between a poor rookie season and one of the worst rookie seasons in league history.

In related news, Matty Mauk is getting a ton of praise and is drawing comparisons to Daniel.

I'm not a gabbert fan. But Jfc people here want to groom a qb and claim they'll be patient. And then they call a qb a bust before his second season of play.

Eli Manning looked as bad if not worse than gabbert did. That's not to say gabbert is Eli Manning. It's to say, relax, the guy is young. He deserves at least 3 years.

I wish the raiders gave Jamarcus Russell more time to develop.

Difference is manning didn't fold when pressured or make bone headed decisions with the football in college.
