Chiefs sign Raiders DT Vance Walker

The Chiefs, who suffered some personnel losses early in free agency, have added a defensive lineman from a division rival.

The club said Friday night it had reached a deal with Raiders defensive tackle Vance Walker. Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports the contract is for three years and worth up to $13 million, with $3.75 million in guarantees.

Walker (6-2, 305) played and started 15 games for the Raiders in 2013, recording 40 tackles and three sacks. He would seem a good fit at defensive end in the Chiefs’ 3-4 front, though it’s possible he could spell Dontari Poe at nose tackle on occasion.

A sixth-year pro from Georgia Tech, the 26-year-old Walker was a seventh-round pick of the Falcons in 2009 and played four seasons for Atlanta. He signed a one-year contract with the Raiders last offseason. Now, after a solid stint as a starter for Oakland, he’s reportedly getting a multi-year deal with Kansas City.

The Chiefs also announced the re-signing of reserve outside linebacker Frank Zombo. News of Zombo’s return came earlier in the week.

It's $5 million a year in a backloaded contract we paid 3 million a year for Vance Walker on a non-backloaded contract basically it's a wash. We will pay roughly the same as Tyson Jackson is going be paid his first couple years so moneywise we're not much ahead. Hopefully Walker's a better player.

Vance Walker was one of the few defensive tackles to record at least one pressure in all 16 games this season. While he only had three sacks, his 41 pressures was tied for eighth most among all defensive/nose tackles.

Jackson can't rush th passer in a passing league.

"Look at his sack numbers last year" blah blah. Look at his pressure numbers and look at each sack he had individually. None Of them were because of him being good at anything, they were literally all coverage luck of the draw sacks.
