I was at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA (where the music died) over the summer. Don McLean's Gold Record for "American Pie" is on the wall in the bar, and in the green room back stage, he wrote some of the lyrics on the wall and autographed them. Very cool.

When I was at MCA Music Publishing (now Universal), we administered his publishing. It was cool to actually hold the original copyright and sheet music in my hand, as I always loved that song as a kid.
