So, Kansas City. . . How does it feel?

As a Texas Tech alum and one who spent three fantastic years in Kansas City (worked downtown, lived in Olathe, enjoyed it all except for the notable lack of quality Mexican food at the time ), my wife and I always enjoyed the "red flood" we saw on fall Fridays when it seemed everyone turned out in Chiefs apparel.

We remember the Price Chopper promotions for the Chiefs, Neal Smith's restaurant, Derrick Thomas' ferocious hits, Marcus Allen's footwork and the abject disappointment of Bono, Grbac and an organization that could get you into the playoffs and then break your heart faster than a frigid prom queen date.

When Mahomes was drafted by Kansas City, I was elated and I quickly found this forum. Don't post much but read often. I, along with a few other Texas Tech alumni familiar with Mahomes, sang his praises here after he was drafted. Much of what we said was accepted on the sheer premise of a fan base so starved for this kind of quality young man that it was taken not so much at face value, but in hope.

Now, after two games into the season, the Chiefs and Kansas City are getting huge national press, Kansas Citians are walking with a bit of the same swagger our Red Raiders did when Mahomes was there, and throughout it all, the young man has not done a single thing to embarrass or disappoint the team, the city or its good people who call it home.

What an incredible ambassador for the team and KC.

It's been a long time in coming, but you've got your quarterback and "face of the future" solidly entrenched.

As a Big XII/K-State guy, I have watched a lot of football in this conference, and I recall Texas Tech games was going to be a high scoring game because of their offense. I know that Kingsbury, Symons, Cumbie, and Harrell were good, but I just didn't see they were a legitimate day 1 prospects, because I felt like they were more of a one read and attack type of guys, with maybe Kingsbury being a 2 read type of a QB.

But when I watched Mahomes play, it was different than the previous QB's mentioned. It felt like he read all of his progressions and made the plays. I felt like he made the offensive players around him better than they really are. I can't recall where I read an article online, but it did say something along the lines that Kingsbury gave Mahomes the keys to run the offense as how he see fit. That's a big accomplishment.

Another thing Mahomes will stress in Indianapolis: He had more responsibilities in Lubbock than you think. Kingsbury allowed Mahomes to begin checking plays at line of scrimmage during the quarterback’s sophomore year, and by last year Mahomes could check any play he wanted. In fact, Kingsbury’s sideline signals were an exception—he used them only when he wanted Mahomes to keep his play no matter what. A scout said that is unusual for a college spread quarterback. It was a virtue of Mahomes starting 28 games.

Well, we've put out a few over the years. One of the better ones being EJ Holub, a Chiefs great. Went to school and was great friends with his daughter and got to hang around their house a lot in junior high and high school. Awesome guy, awesome player.

Donnie Anderson was pretty okay for the Packers and Zach Thomas did good for the Dolphins.

And Wes Welker turned out decent for the Patriots. Lynn Elliott actually kicked well for the Cowboys but sucked for the Chiefs, so there's that. Crabtree was unstoppable at Tech but much like TO, if he could catch passes with his mouth, he'd never drop one since his mouth is always open.

In the last ten/fifteen years, we're seeing more offensive lineman making into the league. Historically our running backs have been fast as hell, but too small for the NFL--same as our receivers.

We haven't had a defense since Coach Spyke Dykes retired.

We do have a promising young stud, true freshman, at quarterback this season who through for 605 yards against Houston and broke Mahomes' freshman record. Alan Bowman is a pocket guy with a very accurate arm and incredible poise. We'll see how he turns out. If he keeps improving while in college, he may make it in the league as well.

One benefit to Mahomes' experience at Tech with no defense is that watching the opposition score has never rattles him. Hell, I think it excites and motivates him.

Uhh... you realize Jimmy Johnson was going for it on 4th down regularly in FG range by the end of his tenure there precisely because he wasn't good right? PARTICULARLY in cold weather.

He was 26 of 39 in Dallas. That sucks. It's amazing anyone hired him after that.
