LNBS: Who wants to talk about Breeland Speaks?

Nobody? Okay. Good thread! Good thread!

Okay, but seriously...

First of all, he rehabbed his knee injury the entire 2019 season, so he stands a good chance of being 100% to start the season. Also, he was issued a 4-game suspension, but apparently the rules state he was able to serve that suspension while on IR last year, so it turns out he WILL be available Week 1.

Veach fell in love with him when he was playing inside and outside on the line at Ole Miss. He liked how he was around the football a lot and could fight through blocks. His move to OLB in Werthers' scheme kind of took some of that away.

We definitely shouldn't hold our breaths or count on him, but... what are the odds we can get Speaks to bulk back up just a bit and put him inside as an interior 3rd down rusher? Or even use him on multiple downs?

There's no way he's going to transition as a full-time 3-technique guy that Chris Jones was for us. I'm not saying that. But if we're going to ship off Jones and roll with a wall of run-stuffing beef in a rotation of Saunders, Nnadi, and (hopefully) Pennel, do we think we can still get decent situational interior pressure with Speaks? At that point, do we need to make it a priority in the draft to find a 3-technique guy?

Or... alternatively....

Do we think the Chiefs believe Speaks is pretty much sunk, where Spags and company saw what they needed to see in one training camp/preseason and said, "Nope. Still shitty." Like, they're not just going to cut him immediately, but they are planning on moving on from him, and if he ends up pleasantly surprising everybody, then that's just icing on the cake. After all, the positive Chris Jones contract talk coming from sources seems to indicate they view Jones more as a need given what he would leave behind.

I mean, I HATED this pick, but Veach was the ****ing man this offseason. Maybe he actually knew something about this guy, who didn't get much of a chance to shine as a rookie playing a completely unfamiliar role on defense. Playing on the line is something he probably figures to have a lot more success at than being a standup OLB, given it was just like 2 or 3 years prior to his rookie season that he was actually playing NT in college.

I remain convinced he has the talent to be valuable depth at a bare minimum, what remains to be seen is if he has the drive and passion to put it all together

That means showing up at every single non-mandatory activity in the best possible shape, and fighting like hell for his career

Shame he probably didn't get much exposure to Suggs, they have similar traits/body types. His qualities could rub off on him

just remember what you all were saying about Kpass.

No reason at all to give up on Speaks yet.

Speaks in his short playing time had a knack for being around the ball. He's not the kind of guy who disappears, so that's something.

I also subscribe to the (conspiracy) theory that he was drafted for the 4-3 so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I suppose, but I liked Kpass from the get-go. Dude was a sculpted, specimen who was also incredibly intelligent trying to learn the game of football. Speaks really isn't a direct comp. here.

Kpass showed up to camp looking like a black Hulk- Speaks looked like Fred Sanford after eating his son.

Kind of hard not to question his dedication at this point.

My God

That sucks but you could play this game with most drafts. All you need is a crystal ball.

As for Speaks, it's a make or break season. He needs to perform like K-pass did. I like having several DL guys who have a lot to prove in 2020..... Speaks, Taco, K-pass. Even Jones and Okafor will have future money riding on this year.
