I don’t know that I love my new job
So long story short, the building that I specifically maintained and worked on was shut down as a Covid casualty and sold to a car dealership (which plans to demolish the building. It’s on the west side of 67th and I-35 for the locals). I’ve been working there for approximately 5 years.

I truly enjoyed my time there but the deal is I was contracted through a company that doesn’t do what I did. Now to find my new role within the company I have taken a slight demotion in role and am basically attempting to learn an entirely new field and it’s cool to learn new things. It’s commercial HVAC. Not easy by any means, but I got my EPA cert and all that good stuff so far. But I don’t love what I’m doing anymore. And that part is worrisome. I want to stick around because I think the upside of the work is amazing if I can stick through it all, but truthfully it’s not that fun to me.

My main question for you guys is what made you fall in love with your craft/job/expertise? I wanna love what I do, and it’s been discouraging to not feel that way as much lately despite the fact I do like the company I work for. I need to find my trigger that’ll ignite my passion.

Restore and resto-mod classic Mustangs and Fords. Everything from basic back to stock type restorations (almost never do these anymore) to full blown SEMA type show cars (which seems to be all we do anymore).

We build cars as well as fabricate custom parts for them, online sales etc.

That’s a good point. And yes, IF should be the right word usage. I was being lazy with my grammar. The thing is, I’ve loved jobs in the past. I loved my last one before it was taken away. It’s gonna be hard to replicate that, and I understand that. My new situation just leaves a lot to be deserved and I’m trying to figure out if I can stay and make it work or if I need to be looking for an out.

Learn all you can about HVAC, save money, buy a used but dependable box van, get shelves and supplies all set inside and start your own company.

It's a challenge but having your own company is well worth it.

Not falling in love with work or doing it because it is our nature to do it is one of the things that separates human beings from the animals. A beaver will spend all day building a damn and be "content" to do it because nature programmed the beaver to do that. A human being collecting shopping carts in Walmart parking lot is doing it for a pay check....his mind can be day dreaming about lounging on a beach somewhere sipping a mojito. The beaver just builds the damn without those self created distractions. The curse of being human is the requirement to labor in a manner that is not part of your nature. In the bible there is a story about the fall of man...one of God's punishments is that men will have to work.....I am always amazed that some uneducated goat herders figured that out thousands of years ago. You might "love your job" but it is still work.....You still completing tasks not driven by your nature...you're not doing something because of some innate drive..

I am really happy with my job. It may not suit everyone, but it's perfect for me. I'm a network technician for a company that has lot's of customers. What I like best about my job is that I'm able to work independently and I'm doing something different every day. We don't have a local office. I get my work on my phone and roll from home in my company truck. I talk to my boss on an as needed basis. I've yet to meet him face to face. Lol. The pay is good and the work is pretty easy. Heck, I spend more time behind the wheel listening to my Sirius radio than I do on the jobs. I may drive 3 hours to Little Rock, spend an hour on the job, eat lunch and drive 3 hours back. All on the clock. Best job I've ever had.

Believe it or not, I've been married to my highschool sweetheart for 26 years AND love what I do for a living.

I think the saying goes, if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Well, I don't LOVE what I do. It's fine, I like it. It's a means to an end though. If I won the lottery I would never log on to another computer again, except of course to check in on CP.

I have many things outside of work that I love, and my job enables me to do them. My wife and I like to travel, we are doing a bunch of work to the house (mostly ourselves, but I've had to contract a few things out cuz I don't know how to do everything). But, I've always felt blessed to make what I make at a job that is...fine. It's not like I love it, but I don't hate it. That makes me fortunate indeed.

I'd say look for the intangibles that are good. Like your co-workers. Your benefits. Your "fringe" benefits (I can pretty much come and go as I please for instance, nobody "approves" vacation, rather they take note that I'll be gone when I say I'll be gone). This job enabled me to be there for my kids while they were growing up. The pay is...good. Not great, not holy shit fantastic, but it's good.

I dunno. I've always thought of work as a necessary evil, and just make the best of it. I think that's pretty good advice for most people. Rarely does anyone truly love what they do.

Live to work or work to live? Those who say they live to work are usually not as happy at work as they claim.

I like what I do but there's not a job in this world that I would put the term love to. There's always stress, commitments and time away from doing other things with any job.

I like working because it gives me purpose, but if I could find a way to cut the hours in half for the same monetary value, I'd do it in a heart beat.
