My Unpopular Take on Wentz

…. Is that he was ****ed from the start yesterday. No one’s fault really. But hear me out.

At OL, he got three whole snaps from Creed, Thuney, and Trey respectively. Zero from Jawaan obviously.

At RB, he got zero from Hunt or Pacheco.

At WR, he got zero from Hopkins or Hollywood and one from Worthy.

That part is whatever, it was the right call by Reid and the staff. Where Wentz really got shafted is having to go against a good defense that had everything to play for in their house.

There was not a worse opponent to go up against yesterday based purely on circumstances. It’s not like Trubisky who got to face a Patriots team that woulda been happy to lose and pick #1. It’s not like had he played even the Raiders or Chargers yesterday; both teams who had already sealed their respective fates beyond Week 18.

He had to lead that offense against the most motivated defense of all 32 yesterday.

I just think the discussion should be contextualized a little. I’d be thrilled to have him back next year and unfortunately for him now, he may not have much of a choice. But all the finger pointing at him is pretty dumb, IMO. Especially when you factor in he drilled that elbow on a helmet during the first quarter.

I think maybe he meant Gabbert?

Daniel and Gabbert went out there in similar year-end situations with backups and didn't completely poop on their shoes.

Chase Daniel is essentially the perfect backup QB. Calm, competent, coachable and unambitious. He's content holding clipboards and waiting for that last game of the season.

And he's going to show up and run the offense if/when he does.

Wentz showed the least of any of the backups we've had in a situation like this during the Reid era. He just didn't demonstrate a single positive trait on Sunday.

I'll say what I say about coaches -- I don't need a reason to fire one. I need a reason to KEEP one. And I didn't see any reasons to retain Wentz yesterday.

Coaches see more than I do so if they wanna keep him, so be it. But there was nothing positive to take away from that game.

Gabbert was awful last year going against a backup opponent too, and that’s the difference.

Mahomes would not have won that game Sunday with the cast of characters we put out there AGAINST that particular opponent under those circumstances.

I still think we aren’t considering enough the impact that elbow shot had. Wentz was not nearly that inaccurate in the preseason and then looks like that? Doesn’t make any sense.

Who says 'won'?

Nobody expects Wentz to win that game.

Show me ANYTHING.

He just didn't.

Good, bad, or whatever it is crazy that somewhat recently Carson Wentz was an MVP contender and obvious franchise QB. Not For Long = NFL.

Another reason why I never believe in the next big thing at QB until he proves longevity and wins something of substance.

He didn’t, but I don’t think it’s illogical to say he was unintentionally sabotaged.

Besides the personnel, that game plan was dog shit. There was no game plan. Preseason esque.

I think it’s a throwaway ball game on every level. Even for Denver.

Watched Wentz for years and he looks like a bad player. The NFL's not amateur youth sports. Players are expected to execute at a high level in stressful environments and everything I've seen (and I've seen a lot) shows that Wentz is fully incapable of doing this. He has wild mental breakdowns during games and takes heinious sacks or throws checkdowns that I doubt even Matt Castle would consider (-4 yard loss to Noah Gray). Once or twice a game he'll make a mechanically perfect elite throw that only a handful of people on earth can make, but that's surrounded by a raggidy ass jagged sea of awful play. And I'm sorry, in 2024 you've got to be able to run the ball some as a QB. Defenses leave entire sides of the field unguarded and flood the area of the field they know the play's going too and carson still takes woeful sacks when he could scramble for 8+ yards. He needs tijunana ibogaine or something. Not a good pickup by the Chiefs. I would have preferred a stable vet that's had years of level-headed play over the jagged ups and downs of Carson Wentz.

He hasn't been the same since the injuries. He's mentally broken, it's pretty obvious when you watch him play.

Man you guys are really overreacting to a meaningless game where Wentz was put in a terrible position.

He didn't play well, I admit, but who did? I don't think Cheifs gave a shit about this game.

Wentz is a capable backup otherwise Reid wouldn't have brought him here. He just had a bad game which is understandable given the circumstances

This isn't Chad Henne here. This is a former starting, high end QB that watched his team win a Super Bowl from the bench. He hasn't been the same since the injuries. Wentz was shot long before he got here.

Well then Reid and Veach made a bad decision but given their history especially at that position I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt. Especially since it was just one meaningless game.

You aren't - that's fine.

I think there's also a very good chance that anything more than a cursory look at game film happened. Was 0 reason to put in to scouting and preparing for that game and not potential opponents.

And while I didn't watch the game, possible also could have tried different looks to see how Denver would respond.

It has nothing really to do with the Denver game. He's been broken for a while, it's pretty obvious.
