Alex Smith to ask for release

If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in? Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp. |

According to ESPN's Trent Dilfer, new Chiefs coach Andy Reid "courted" Alex Smith last offseason.
"There was a courtship last year, to a certain degree," Dilfer said. "I don't know a whole lot. I just know there was a courtship. It was not even an inside source, you know what I mean? It was just kind of the scuttle in the offseason." Dilfer and Smith are close friends from their days as teammates in 2006-07. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Chiefs were one of the teams already showing interest in Smith. The tea leaves suggest Kansas City is the early favorite to land Smith via trade, likely for a middle-round pick. Jan 31 - 8:02 PM http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3119/alex-smith |

I hope Ian Rapaport tells me about Kirk Ferentz's relationship with Alex Smith and if they can work together well as QB and coach.

I'm going to preface this by saying I want Geno Smith at #1 and I'll be upset if we don't draft him.
However, Alex Smith >>> Matt Cassel. I think he's a good QB, to be honest. The lone concern is his red zone offense. It was horrible last year. Why? Can it be fixed? Andy Reid has always had the ability to make his QB's look real good though. He got a 2nd and Rodgers-Cromartie after teams saw Kolb play 4 or 5 games (games in which he, for the most part, thrived). Foles had a couple of games last year where he totally flashed as well (and some other not so good games, lol).... Smith is a veteran, has a decent enough arm, has accuracy and is pretty mobile. I'd hate drafting a LT 1st overall but if there is a reasonable trade down where we land a guy like Millner (or whatever the **** his name is) and then take another QB in the 2nd or 3rd OR WHATEVER with Smith...I guess I'd probably at least give it a shot before I hung myself in my closet. THAT SAID Can we please just draft a ****ing QB #1 and be done with it? |

I would love for Kirk Ferentz to leave for wherever Alex Smith ends up. A lot.

I was trying to say that I could understand Reid drafting Geno and starting Cassel for a few games like he did with Doug Pederson when he drafted McNabb. Reid has been pretty good identifying quarterbacks, coaching them up and then moving them for picks. Now, before you jump to conclusions...that doesn't mean that's what I WANT to happen...just that I could see Andy Reid trying to get value from Cassel similar to what he did with Kolb and others. |

Like has been said plenty of times, after his shoulder was put right, he's improved every year. It's entirely possible that the 49ers would be playing in the Super Bowl this week even if he'd started all year. He is a former #1 overall pick. He has the talent, and it's not like he's 35. As a free agent signing it would be brilliant - or a no-brainer, depending on how you want to look at it. Signing him doesn't preclude us from drafting a young QB. |
