Should I pick this game up? I'm looking for an "adventure" game.
"Grand Theft Auto in the Old West" is a pretty accurate description. You basically have a huge (and absolutely gorgeous) world that is completely open*. You'll spend most of your time on horseback. You can shoot animals and birds, then skin them for money. You can drive a wagon, stagecoach, and cart, or hop on a train. You can pick up a wanted poster in town, then track down the bounty. There are different types of challenges like "Shoot 5 birds froma moving train" and "Kill a bear with a knife."

And all that doesn't include the story missions. Just like GTA, there are mission givers that you talk to in order to advance the story. And also jst like GTA, these missions involve seedy characters and situations which sometimes require you to make a moral decision.

Unlike GTA, gun combat is very smooth and fluid. I suck at first person shooters, but I really like the combat here. There's an auto lock-on feature that will automatically snap to a target when you press the aim button, and then will track that target for a short while, allowing you time to take your shot. A lot of FPS fans found this too easy. I thought it was 'just right' for a non-FPS guy like me.

Overall, it's probably the best game I've played since Assassin's Creed II. And I would defintely label it as an "adventure" game rather than a "shooter".

* Well, almost 'completely open'. You have to progress through he story before you can get to Mexico and West Elizabeth. But the area that you can get to from the very beginning (New Austin) is absolutely huge.

Agreed. Having beat both games completely, though, I would say that RDR is on a whole different level of "good" when comparing the two. RDR is on par with games like Mass Effect and KOTOR as far as playing satisfaction goes. It's like in the 95th percentile of all the single player games I have ever played.

It's all 3rd person, just like all the other GTA games.

So, this game is like Bwana Grand Theft Auto, basically?

Killing people with guns, rifles, etc out in the old Wild West?

Interesting.

Also, if any video game has a thread with over 500 posts, its probably a must buy.

The thing that's got me hooked is that it's comparable to GTA.....but they fixed all of the shit that made GTA annoying. I stopped playing GTA after about a week because it was almost impossible to get any missions done because the cities were so ****ing huge and it would get annoying looking at the map every second to see which turn I should make.

RDR is WIDE ****ING OPEN. You can easily look on the radar and see where something is. The towns are close enough that it doesn't take forever to get there....but far enough apart where you can have fun hunting until you arrive.

Honestly....buy this ****ing game.
Awesome. Thanks guys. Looks like I will be buying this ASAP.

Works for me. Whenever it comes out on PC, I will get one. Rockstar games usually don't disappoint.
