Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

Turnovers by the QB killed us the last few years and if we cut that in half an extra 2nd pick won't mean nothing. They got the QBOTF in Smith-That is why they gave up what they did. He was a #1 pick and they feel they can win Now- not Hopefully build something down the road.
But win at what level? 10 wins? 11 wins? Enough to make the playoffs, maybe get homefield in Round 1, maybe win an opening round game. But probably not enough to win anything of real significance.

I don't want any part of a QBotF who ranks in the high teens/low 20s in the NFL QB hierarchy. Because the odds are you're not winning anything that matters with that guy.

By the way, and im asking, and not being a smart ass. When exactly was the last CHIEFS PLAYOFFS WIN?

Because, I can tell you this. When the 49ers beat the saints, it was an INCREDIBLE moment for me, because they hadn't won a playoff game since 2002 before that.
You realize the difference between the 49ers winning and losing the Superbowl is Kaepernick. He didn't lose the game necessarily, but he didn't win it either. You say the Ravens defense was the difference because they stopped the 9ers, when the problem was that Kaepernik didn't beat the 9ers defense. Lucky for him he's young.

With the way the league is now, I think it's a better chance

I completely agree with this. I was at every game in the 90's. We had championship d every year and simply ignored the offensive side of the ball. Marty just could not evaluate QB's RB's and definately WR's.

So when we finally get Marcus and Montana- 2 quality players- Bingo.

We will be runniing all over teams this year and out D should be lights out not having to play 45 minutes of every game. Smith will help both sides of the ball. i think he is going to surprise you.
Yes, the 93 defense was VERY beastly while allowing Houston to put us in a 10-0 hole that Montana dug them out of.

Peyton Manning likely plays in the Super Bowl if Rahim Moore doesn't fall down against the Ravens (and wins that game while throwing for 250 yards and 3 TDs/1 INT against an elite defense).

You can believe Smith will surprise me. I will believe he can be more than a game manager and is capable of taking the Chiefs to the heights when I see it happen.

Ravens were a wildcard last year- what they did on the road against great offensive teams was incredible- then knocked off the 49ers high powered O as well.

Defense wins championships. I think we have a great D- and will only be better with a ball control- smash mouth Offense on the other side.

I think we are at least a Wild card team this year- which would be a big jump from last year.

Houston had the number 1 Offense that year if I remember right? The run and gun and a great running game. I miss Montana though- his arm was shot but he just had that spirit that made the guys believe they could win no matter what.

18 of the past 20 Super Bowl winners have one thing in common: Elite QB play from a QB who ranks in the top half of the league.

Brady (3)
Manning (1)
Manning (2)
Roethlisberger (2)
Rodgers (1)
Flacco (1)
Brees (1)
Warner (1)
Elway (2)
Favre (1)
Aikman (2)
Young (1)

Flacco is the "worst" of that bunch and the "worst" QB to win a Super Bowl since 2003, when the Bucs had a historically great defense.

Obviously the elite guys have a better chance, but there isn't the drop from the top to mid level guys there once was. I think if you have a top half qb, you have a chance.

Whether smith is that or not remains to be seen

To me, its like saving money by buying your furniture at Walmart. It will fall apart sooner rather than later. If you would have been willing to spend just a little bit more and waited for a sale, you could have bought solid wood furniture that would last for years. Hell, it might be around pass down to your children.

Yes, the Ravens' elite D played at an extremely high level. But Flacco also turned in an elite performance at QB.

A good defense and elite QB can win championships. An elite defense and good QB can win championships. A historically elite defense and game manager QB can win championships.

Which will the Chiefs have?

Besides... Alex Smith couldn't take the 49ers to the promised land with an elite defense and best overall roster in the NFL.

Just can't get on board with it until I see it. What we know/can observe just doesn't support it.

Just being a wild card team isn't enough unless the team is good enough to get hot and make the big run. There's a big difference between a 10-6 wild card team like the 2010 Packers and the 2010 10-6 Chiefs/division champs.

Alex Smith is a younger version of Dave Krieg. That's all he is. We gave up two second round picks for Dave Krieg. Just let that sit in for a second.
