Alex Smith to ask for release

If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in? Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp. |

I bet the 49ers can get a 2nd for Smith...maybe even with a condition on it that ups it to a 1st.

but I'm pretty sure there will be some sort of a bidding war for him. He's a good QB. I don't want him as a Chiefs fan, that being said. |

Meh. Maybe. We gave a 2nd for Matt Cassel.
I'd say the 49ers have a pretty good case using stats to support not trading him for less than a 2nd or a 3rd with some conditions... and I'm thinking a team would probably bite. Carson Palmer went for what? A 1st and a 3rd? Two 1sts? I forget. |

and I know it was the dipshit Raiders but I'd honestly take Alex Smith now over Carson Palmer then (but I was always a huge Carson Palmer is way overrated guy)

I could possibly seeing the 49ers releasing Smith as a favor to him for being a professional in the Kaepernick deal if they win a Super Bowl. I wouldn't, though...since he's a valuable trading chip IMO.

That alone is more than all the facebook posts and radio call ins that you've heard saying we shouldn't draft a QB. And we haven't even gotten to other forums yet.

Cassel wasn't worth a squirt, but Alex Smith is more or less proven as a starter in the league. He's worth at least what Cassel was. They should get a second round pick for him normally. That's why he'd be so much more of a steal if we could get him for free. |

Smith asked for his release. The 49ers have to pay a $1 million dollar roster bonus on like the third or fourth "league day". I'm willing to bet that teams will play chicken before giving up anything higher than a late third rounder. |
