More or less if you grow up in the state you cheer for the flagship school unless there's a family connection or you go to a rival school or something.

1 part Kst homer 1 part bs stirring the drink I wonder why people take him seriously. The shtick is painfully obvious. I've grown tired of it and find myself listening to Cowherd and SVP podcasts in the afternoons now. Just trading one shtick for another but still.

I very much view the Big Ten as a slowly dying league. To be successful on an elite level in college football you need ties into one of the three anchor states, Fla, Tx, or Cali. Take that and trending population shifting from the rust belt to the sun belt and you have a league that's slowly slipping further and further behind the SEC, Big XII, and PAC 12.

Which is why they made a desperate play for Rutgers. They are smoking crack if they think they're really going to make up their demographic deficit by getting the NYC market with those slugs. But then, I'm sure their consultants know much more about the data than I do. From the appearance however, the BIG looked desperate and this move will backfire.
Don't their current members like Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota get sick and tired of seeing their brand diluted with the 2 adds, and talk of schools like VA or GT? I'd be pretty irked. |

Rutgers is a terrible add. I can't imagine their current members are all that thrilled but then again they had to vote on it right?

Rutgers isn't a horrible add at all. For one the Big Ten schools recruit New Jersey hard. And second and the most important reason is they get .80 per cable household in the state of New Jersey for the Big Ten Network. $$$$$$$. Not to mention the big dogs (Ohio St, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska) now get a game in the NYC market. More $$$$$.

It was a lot simpler than that: they felt the league was too unstable. They didn't know what we know now about the Fox contract or the GOR. Boren was trying to escape to the PAC. It really wasn't a hard choice at all, nor did it really require any fan pressure. The admins had an easy decision.

Got nothin' to do w/ recruiting. Them 'n the ACC already rape that state yearly. Rutgers probably doesn't keep more than 1 or 2 of it's top players most years. It's an awful football program. Makes Mizzou look like a blue blood by comparison and their hoops aren't any better. State of probably 8 or 9 million people and they generate so much local interest they play home games in a juco stadium. They actually managed to take their crap product and dilute it further with the Scarlet Knights and Maryland.

The Big 12 is at a crossroad. Nebraska is the most successful football program in Big 12 history. They are gone, and they are glad to be gone. Oklahoma is the second most successful, and they have been on a gradual decline for several years. Texas is third, and their decline has been more pronounced. KSU is fourth, and they have experienced nothing but futility outside the Snyder era. West Virginia has some recent success, but they look like shit in a real conference...same with TCU. Oklahoma State and Baylor have made a little noise recently, but both were very average this year. Iowa State is Iowa State, and Kansas is Kansas. Nobody is clamoring to play in the Big 12. There's simply no status boost like there is playing in the SEC. The SEC allure is very real, and the fans understand and embrace it. It pisses off the rest of the country, but SEC fans don't care because they have scoreboard overe every other conference combined. A week or so ago, I wrote about what I think is the inevitable future basketball dominance of the SEC as well. If you think people hate the SEC now, you haven't seen anything yet.
