USA Today predicts Chiefs at 4-12 for 2014

I could see it happening but really 6-8 wins seems pretty doable.

AFC West

Broncos 12-4 (2): Could be better than 2013 team even if wins and offensive output dip. But schedule is murderous.

Chargers 8-8: Last year's schedule allowed late-season charge. This year's could easily produce late-season slide.

Chiefs 4-12: Tight salary cap meant crippling free agent defections, and they didn't sufficiently reload in draft.

Raiders 3-13: Best thing influx of over-the-hill vets can do is change culture. Carr, Mack promise brighter days ahead.

How do you build that true contender?

It seems that you are suggesting that a team needs to be really terrible for a couple of years to do that.

If that's the case, I'd like to suggest the KC Chiefs under Pioli as an example of being truly terrible.

And I'd also like to offer up that the current Chiefs team is now attempting to build a true contender, providing the example that they went from a dismal 2-14 to a very respectable 11-5 in a single season.

So, as such, aren't the current KC Chiefs actually doing exactly what you want them to do?

Well, your assessment of the situation is completely and utterly wrong.

I don't put any energy into the Chiefs. That's the issue - you can't differentiate putting effort into Chiefsplanet, a site that I helped START, from putting effort into rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Honestly, your thought processes are like that of a high school kid. Everybody is "weak" and "pussies". So simplistic and unimaginative.

I get this... but they chose to go another direction. The end result of that direction might surprise you. I have a friend that got in and out of dozens of shit relationships... didn't stop her from giving it an honest effort time and again. It eventually paid off, and she got married going on 4 years now, has 2 kids, and looks to be in great shape for the future.

What are the choices of response anyway? To give up? will lamenting endlessly actually help? Why not just grudgingly accept the choices made and hope for the best?

Reid and Dorsey... and frankly the players and owners.. couldn't afford to do things your way. They needed to get people excited about Chiefs football immediately.. and aside from a dozen or more complainers at CP, the fan base has responded as they hoped. They needed to win now.. and they did. Probably did a lil better than even they expected. They just fell short of the ultimate goal.. just as 30 other teams did.

Or are you trying to insert the no-so-subtle suggestion that Alex Smith wasn't as good as Andrew Luck in that game and that's why we didn't win?

If so, I'd suggest you go take a look at the box score.

I love how any discussion that isn't 100% positive and flattering is considered "lamenting" and anybody that makes a negative comment isn't "hoping for the best".

The NFL guys from Grantland do a podcast on the AFC West and they're not too kind on the Chiefs. Also a lot about Alex Smith extension...

It also got Tony Gonzalez and Will Shields.. though the latter was a 3rd rounder.

Point being the majority of the Chiefs' seasons since 1987 have been "go 9-7 and get into the wildcard" types of years and the Chiefs have absolutely nothing to show for it.

The common denominator of course is the bizarre allergy the Hunt family has in actually drafting and developing a quarterback but that's supposition.

What's clear is the "9-7" approach is proven not to work whereas the Chiefs' have never completed a proper rebuild which necessitates 2-3 seasons of 10+ losses but will eventually net 10+ win seasons on a regular basis.
