Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

It's silly to say, here's what will happen, and here's the QBs that'll go in these rounds, before the college season has been played. Before last season Barkley was a sure top ten pick. Half way through last season there was a legitimate argument for taking Geno Smith high in the first.

Players will rise and fall. If Smith stinks and Bray turns into nothing I don't doubt they'll draft a QB high. To say you don't see it, because they didn't ridiculously reach for a QB this year doesn't mean they just won't take a QB high. That's a bad conclusion.

We haven't even started training camp and the bitching and moaning about next years draft has already began.

But hey, these guys are just enlightened fans, we are wrong to look forward to a new season with a new staff and a new QB.

Your game console analogy is how I feel about Geno Smith in the draft. I am glad we didn't do that. I don't want the Chiefs to draft a QB just to draft a 1st round QB.

So many people here, it seems, wanted one of the QBs at first overall, they don't care who, despite, no team might be starting any of those QBs this year, and just see what he can do. Yeah, that's fun an interesting for fans. He could completely suck or he could be alright, don't see any really good QBs out of this class. So, if the ceiling is a little better than Smith, and the floor is complete bust, I don't see the upside for the coaches. To wait out what probably won't happen , and watch the roster get a few years older before going in another direction. A good team can win with Alex Smith. I have no problem with them seeing if they can give Smith a good team around him, and seeing what they can do these next few years.

I was being sarcastic/bitter, but you'll notice I didn't predict any specific QBs. That's just what life as a Chiefs fan has beaten into me.

Dorsey/Reid does not equal Pioli/Crennel, or Peterson/Edwards.

There was no #1 QB around this year. So they took the highest rated vet.

Both Dorsey and Reid have been around/chosen/groomed franchise QB's. To assume they will now become Carl Peterson and Marty Shottenheimer circa 1990 is absurd.

Neither Dorsey nor Reid give a rat's ass what Pioli or Peterson did because they shouldn't. They are doing what they feel is best with the options they have available to them right NOW. Through that prism, it's pretty easy to be pleased so far.
