Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

They are easily spending over $140 million dollars on fielding a team this year. You don't just phone it in for a year in hopes of getting better players next year.

There was no #1 QB around this year. So they took the highest rated vet.

Both Dorsey and Reid have been around/chosen/groomed franchise QB's. To assume they will now become Carl Peterson and Marty Shottenheimer circa 1990 is absurd.

Neither Dorsey nor Reid give a rat's ass what Pioli or Peterson did because they shouldn't. They are doing what they feel is best with the options they have available to them right NOW. Through that prism, it's pretty easy to be pleased so far.
It's not just about this year. It's about this year, next year, 5 years from now.

It's not just about QBs available in the first round this year. It's about the QBs available in rounds 2 and 3 this year, and the QBs available early in next year's draft, too.

It's about that "highest rated vet" you mention having a pretty established ceiling as a player, and that ceiling NOT being good enough to win league or conference championships unless paired with an elite defense (and even then maybe not good enough).

It's about the price paid for that "highest rated vet" being high enough that there's a decent chance the Chiefs hitch the wagon to him for an extended period of time.

You could have cut and paste this from about 20 separate responses I have posted on the subject in various threads on teh QB situation and our FO.

Glad to see someone else gets it.

Until they draft and groom a quarterback of our own then they are exactly like Carl Pioli regimes. Until I see something to convince me otherwise I don't see anything different for this team to make a Super Bowl contender year in and year out. We don't even have a window of opportunity with Alex Smith to win a Super Bowl it's just wishful thinking on homerisms that think we can Trent Dilfer our way into the big game.

This, the whole arguement that is still going on is getting absurd now. Everyone knows that some posters think it was a good first offseason for Reid and Dorsey while some think the world will stop revolving because we're starting Alex. Or that we gave too much for him.

By all means though, keep trying to convience each other who's more right before a snap is played.

I'm ready to see what happens on the field. The season can't start soon enough.

This is the first I'm hearing of your displeasure for not drafting a QB, why haven't you shared it before now?

Um, alex smith with far less talent on OFFENSE, did compete for a championship with the 49ers in 2011. And spare me the great defense remark. There were several question marks that we didn't know about going into that season.

The last playoff victory for the Chiefs was in 1993. Which, coincidentally, was the last time the Chiefs had an elite QB.

Four years of Alex Smith playing like he did the last two years in San Francisco are four years spinning your tires, because the chance that's enough to win the league title or the Super Bowl is very small.
Yet to be seen. I have yet to see anyone argue with me successfully about this one fact. The Ravens, and 49ers, did not as a team, pass for over 4000 yards, nor throw for more than 28 tds during the regular season. Now, Joe Flacco's post season, was epic. But, if we are just talking regular season, neither team was the number one seed in their conference. The 49ers were second, and the Ravens were 4th. So, just getting in, can make all the difference in the world. That's where coaching comes in, and having a vet qb who has been there comes in. Just my thoughts. I may be stupid, and this is a 6-10 football team. There is a reason that Andy Reid decided to come here over going to Arizona, or to San Diego, where he would of had a much better qb. These are all thoughts in my head....

Do you think I should post more about my displeasure sir?

People keep talking about how we should accept the Alex Smith trade so I redundantly keep saying no.

You know what. I get this. The more my niners buddies tell me I need to just get over it and like Kaep, the harder I refuse. I get that. Good point.

You can't see how much better the 9ers were with Kaep than Alex Smith? Something is wrong with you.
