ESPN Browns reporter Pat McManamon expects the Browns to have interest in acquiring Alex Smith this offseason.
It makes all the sense in the world from a dot-connecting standpoint. The Chiefs are fully expected to move on from Smith, even with him coming off his best pro season. Patrick Mahomes offers more upside, and the Chiefs believe Smith has taken them as far as he can already. In Cleveland is GM John Dorsey, who was the Chiefs' GM when they acquired Smith from the 49ers. Cleveland has a ton of cap space and can splurge at quarterback, where Smith carries a $20.9 million cap hit for 2018. The Browns need to add a veteran and high-end rookie at the position. I wonder if the pick that's like 60 in the second round from Cleveland is what we're looking at...

Hopefully, Washington just signs Cousin to a new contract and gets him off the table. That would make Alex Smith the top Veteran QB available. Smith also comes from a trade which means it won't require a big signing bonus etc. If you have the draft picks, Alex Smith is the cheaper option.

There is always going to be a team desperate for a QB.
-Browns can’t possibly want to start a 21 year old in that disaster. -If Cousins leaves, Redskins will be extremely desperate with no draft options. -Todd Bowles has been in NY for 3 years and his 2nd rd QB was horrific. -Denver has failed 3X finding a QB in the draft and needs to win now. -The Cardinals have zero QB’s on the roster, Case Keenum is probably staying in Minnesota and Bradford is injured half the time. -The Jags have Blake Bortles and no draft options. The market will be very strong for Cousins and Alex

Think about it like this. If Mahomes had his 5th year option according to the salaries right now....his 5th year option would be $23 million. Now think what it's going to be when his ACTUAL 5th year option comes due. |
