Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

Jaworski rates Chiefs QB at No. 20 among NFL starters

The Kansas City Star
Former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Ron Jaworski ranks new Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith No. 20 among the NFL's 32 starting quarterbacks.

That's according to Jaworski's ratings on ESPN's MediaZone site, transcribed from his three-minute daily segments dubbed "Jaws' QB Countdown" on SportsCenter and NFL Live.

Smith, of course, was acquired in a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and has yet to throw a pass in Kansas City (aside from OTAs, that is).

Here are some excerpts from Jaworski's evaluation of Smith:

“A year ago, Smith was coming off his best season in the NFL, having led the 49ers to the NFC Championship. This year, he’s the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great move by (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid to acquire Smith.

“The defining element of Smith’s play is efficiency. He executes the offense the way it’s designed, and he makes very few mistakes. Last season – for the second year in a row – he was exceptional on first down. In 2012 he led the NFL in first-down passing, with a quarterback rating of 119. Much of it came off play-action, or in the case of the 49ers, hard run-action out of base personnel. There was no better play-action quarterback last season than Smith. He had a quarterback rating of over 132.

“Smith has been outstanding out of multiple tight end personnel over the last couple of seasons. No quarterback has thrown the ball more with three tight ends on the field. You don’t see that very often in today’s NFL.

“This play was beautifully designed with all three tight ends to the same side. First, look at the impact of the run-action on the two linebackers and the safety. This was hard run-action. Then you see that Delanie Walker’s vertical route occupied the corner. That left Vernon Davis matched on a safety, a safety that initially reacted to run. He had no chance on Davis’ wheel route.

“One area Smith improved in 2012 was in the pre-snap phase of the game. He was much better at the line of scrimmage checking and audibling.

“It will be interesting to see what Andy Reid does in Kansas City. Don’t be surprised if he turns Smith loose a little bit and features an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on quick throws. Remember, Alex Smith played for Urban Meyer at Utah.”

Other QB's that Jaworski has analyzed so far:

No. 32 Matt Flynn

No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb

No. 29 Chad Henne

No. 28 Mark Sanchez

No. 27 Christian Ponder

No. 26 Brandon Weeden

No. 25 Michael Vick

No. 24 Ryan Tannehill

No. 23 Carson Palmer

No. 22 Sam Bradford

No. 21 Josh Freeman

Your game console analogy is how I feel about Geno Smith in the draft. I am glad we didn't do that. I don't want the Chiefs to draft a QB just to draft a 1st round QB.
Jason Campbell... Anyone who doesn't tie us down really. Not concerned about barely missing the playoffs this year. We can do that with anyone.

Kansas City Chiefs

Key moves: Signed WR Donnie Avery, TE Anthony Fasano, G Geoff Schwartz, DE Mike DeVito, LB Akeem Jordan, CB Sean Smith, CB Dunta Robinson; traded for QB Alex Smith; drafted OT Eric Fisher, TE Travis Kelce, RB Knile Davis, LB Nico Johnson; CB Sanders Commings; lost QB Matt Cassel, RB Peyton Hillis, WR Steve Breaston, OT Eric Winston, G Ryan Lilja, DT Glenn Dorsey, CB Javier Arenas, S Abram Elam; hired head coach Andy Reid, OC Doug Pederson, DC Bob Sutton, consultants Chris Ault and Brad Childress

Where they got better: Quarterback. Naysay all you want, but Smith completed 61.3 percent of his passes in 2011 and a whopping 70.2 percent, prior to injury, in 2012. Placed in an offense that properly uses him, Smith can be efficient and effective. Andy Reid seems determined to provide Smith with just such an environment, too, as he’s brought on pistol innovator Chris Ault and has been toying with that formation, among others. Having a legitimate No. 1 quarterback will be a godsend for the Chiefs following a season that saw Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn slop their way to a 2-14 record.

Where they got worse: Inside linebacker, possibly. The honest answer is that the Chiefs are no worse at any spot than they were to close 2012 — remember, this was a 2-14 team that finished dead last in points scored and 25th in points allowed. From a personnel standpoint (and it’s hardly that important given the circumstances), the Chiefs have not recovered from Jovan Belcher’s tragic murder-suicide in December. They have Akeem Jordan penciled in as the starter next to Derrick Johnson at inside linebacker, but there is little in Jordan’s background to indicate he can handle that starting job for 16 games.

Breakout player: Travis Kelce, TE. The Chiefs rolled the dice in Round 3 on Kelce, who carried some red flags into the draft. That gamble could pay off in a big way. Kelce should see plenty of playing time, and he has the athletic ability to thrive in Andy Reid’s West Coast attack.

Where they stand: Seemingly every season in the NFL, a team bounces back from a last-place finish to make the playoffs. Are the Chiefs the 2013 Cinderella? Granted, it is a massive leap from 2-14 to the playoffs, so let’s start a little more slowly: Kansas City could have an elite secondary after adding CBs Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson; RB Jamaal Charles might bust loose in Reid’s scheme; Smith has developed into an impressive QB, and he’s behind what might be a very solid O-line; the receivers and defensive front seven have ample talent. This may not be a 10-win team, but a minimum of six wins is realistic.

Dave Krieg threw for 3700 yards and 32 TDs in 1984.

In 2013, Alex Smith hasn't come close.

Don't even get me started on the 300-yard games comparison.

Jason Campbell is a horrible QB.
There have been a lot of QBs lately that couldn't get us to the playoffs.

actually. No I cant see how the 49ers were a better team. I can see how the passing game was better. Everything else, was worse. The turnovers went up, we dropped from the number one rushing team in football to the 4th, our defense fell from 2nd to 9th by seasons end. Our scoring defense fell dramatically from top 3, to around 14th. And a seahawks team that with alex smith at qb got held to what 10 points, scored 42 on Colin Kaepernicks led 49ers and also lost us Mario Manningham for the season, and he got Vernon Davis knocked out as well. So, no. more explosive? Yes, better equipped to come back, sure. But, that's the rub. Very rarely did alex smith trail, and need to come back.....

Is Colin Kaepernick more talented, yes. He is a better qb today than alex smith. I don't think so. His ceiling however is much higher. Although, he could sophomore slump badly this year.

And how many Super Bowls did he win or even play in or even get a whiff getting to? So yeah obviously 300 yards is the be all, end all.

And what year in his Career did he do that? What year 11 or 12.

And it was 3600 yards with 32 TD's and 24 INT's. Yeah that's a winning combo.

Your argument is awesome.

Question:

If the "safe" strategy taken by Reid and Dorsey in this draft ends how many of us think it will-- setting up a firm foundation for nothing but game managing broke dick veteran QBs to take giant shits on this already feces-stained franchise with no hope of sustained playoff success because of the lack of a true QB-- will you finally put to rest this horrible strawman true fanism about "Good thing we didn't just draft a QB in the first round just to draft one! That would have been awful!"

As it is, I see a potentially stellar offensive line with a stupendous RB and a decent WR1. A game manager can win regular season games with those weapons. But not playoff games. And especially not championships.

I'm still in awe that so many of you love that we didn't take a risk on being a truly great team that fans of other teams around the league talk about like they currently do the Seahawks and 49ers. Eric Fisher was a safe pick. That's all you ****ing care about.

Drunk rant over.
