HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

I am actually pretty optimistic. It should do very well from a rating/critical acclaim standpoint. We all know that Clash of Kings is a great story and Storm of Swords is arguably an even better story. Many of the setpieces will be the same so the costs will not be as prohibitive going forward. HBO tends to stick with its homerun shows for much longer than 2 years if at all possible.

The fates of Deadwood and Rome give me eternal pause.

On some other site I read that the creators have faith because HBO is under new management and they explicitly said they don't want to make the same mistake as the one they made with Deadwood.
Rome ended early because BBC pulled its funding after the two year contract ran out and it was one of the most expensive TV productions ever. |

It all comes down to viewers in the end, I think. The premiere numbers were good, but I'm going to keep my optimism cautious until I see how it's looking in a month, once the newness wears off.
Interestingly, A Clash of Kings is currently the #3 most popular download on Audible. |

I'm cautiously optimistic.
Hopefully, it'll go beyond 2 seasons, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't. |

Deadwood meet an early demise because Milch went full reerun and decided he would rather do "John From Cincinnati" instead of Deadwood. I think HBO wanted to do more seasons but obviously couldn't without Milch. I could be completely wrong, but I think that's how it went down.

I enjoyed it and thought the acting was excellent. I got a tiny Deadwood fix as a couple of actors were also in JFC, Garret Dillahunt specifically. The series finale was beyond reeruned though and answered zero questions about anything. Seems they were banking on another season but that usually doesn't happen when you have seven viewers.
