that Belgian defense was pretty vulnerable on the left side imo--we just failed to probe it sufficiently (primarily because of Yedlin's deference). Heard a caller on Sirius today make mention that Bradley was so ineffectual mainly because he was used to feeding 3 instead of one---seems legit to me. and as for the trailing, I find it amazing how they held up with constant chasing the ball. What is distasteful to me is the double-speak, and I can see how that wore thin with some in Germany. He does deserve credit for the mental toughness--we're always up to the task physically, but past teams would've wilted with such lopsided possession in a couple of games.

When I say we missed Altidore, it's not because I think he was this goal scoring machine. More that he and Dempsey were peas and carrots. Altidore excelled at winning long balls and creating opportunities for others and Dempsey excels more at following up on opportunities and sending free balls in the box home. Asking Dempsey to field in balls then create scoring chances as well was asking too much of his skills, especially with Kompany in the middle.

In all fairness the comment he was replying to was asinine. Of course Howard is ready to "play with the big boys." He does it for a living in the freaking Premier League.

I watch the Bundesliga and not MLS so I have no previous knowledge to go by when it comes to Bradley, but if losing 1 guy suddenly makes him fumble the ball, miss nearly every pass, and continually lose the ball to the opposition, then Altidore doesn't get enough credit and Bradley gets too much credit. Because he flat out ****ing sucked virtually the entire WC minus that last pass to Green. He's suppose to be the face of the US team and he shit all over it.

Totally agreed on all, so why wait until the 11th hour to try Green. I didn't agree with the selection (over Landon) but Jeezus, is that not just like Marty going with Gannon to try to bail in the last minute vs Indy?

As to Bradley, I pretty much agree, but he is danged good with those deft passes (normally) and having multiple options up front fuels that....still, agreed that he was mostly a disappointment.

I have seen more than once in this thread reference to US making 3 consecutive knockout rounds. Not true, only two consecutive. We completely shit the bed in 2006.

I've had some friends point out this is the reason we suck hairy balls in soccer: our stars go into the other pro sports. This is of course absurd for many reasons, the least of which is that even our pro sports have already been invaded by foreigners (25% of the NBA and MLB are now foreign, and the NHL is about 70%). Football doesn't apply obv since so many players are enormous and hence not really eligible to play, outside of the secondary and maybe WR/RB who are also are big guys.

America has 315 million people. And just got schooled by a nation with 11 million. That's just sad.
