Shooting at TDKR Midnight Premiere in Aurora, CO. Multiple dead.

At least 10 moviegoers were killed and 39 injured at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora in the Denver suburbs. They were attending a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

The theater was packed with a lot of people, many of them young fans, at the time the shooting started, 9news reports. The violence erupted some 15 minutes after the movie started, witnesses said.

Some say that when they first heard the shooting, they thought it was some new type of special effect.

Local media reports that two gunmen were involved in the rampage. An explosive device was set off during the shooting, injuring several people.

Witnesses said the gunmen were probably wearing body armor and gas masks and used some kind of a tear gas bomb in the attack.

Some reports say police have apprehended one of the assailants while the second one is still at large.

Police have cleared people from the scene over fears that another explosive device might be on the premises.

Aurora medical services were alerted to attend to the large number of injured

Aurora theater shooting: Gun sales up since tragedy
Firearm interest spikes as some seek protection

The Denver Post

Background checks for people wanting to buy guns in Colorado jumped more than 41 percent after Friday morning's shooting at an Aurora movie theater, and firearms instructors say they're also seeing increased interest in the training required for a concealed-carry permit.

"It's been insane," Jake Meyers, an employee at Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo in Parker, said Monday.

When he arrived at work Friday morning — just hours after a gunman killed 12 and injured 58 others at the Century Aurora 16 theater — there already were 15 to 20 people waiting outside the store, Meyers said.

He called Monday "probably the busiest Monday all year" and said the basic firearms classes that he and the store's owner teach are
booked solid for the next three weeks, something that hadn't happened all year.

"A lot of it is people saying, 'I didn't think I needed a gun, but now I do,' " Meyers said. "When it happens in your backyard, people start reassessing — 'Hey, I go to the movies.' "

Between Friday and Sunday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm — a 43 percent increase over the previous Friday through Sunday and a 39 percent jump over those same days on the first weekend of July.

The biggest spike was on Friday, when there were 1,216 checks, a 43 percent increase over the average number for the previous two Fridays.

The checks are required before anyone may legally purchase a gun in Colorado. Because some purchasers may have bought more than one gun or decided against their purchase, the actual number bought may have been different from 2,887.

Such increases aren't unusual in the wake of mass shootings.

After a gunman in Tucson killed six people and injured others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, in 2010, background checks in Arizona jumped 60 percent over the same date one year earlier, according to the FBI.

A similar increase occurred in Virginia after the shootings at Virginia Tech University in 2007.

Dion Studinski, who teaches a course required for people to apply for a concealed-carry permit, said his class for Saturday at Firing-Line gun store and indoor shooting range in Aurora is overbooked.

"We've definitely had an increase," he said.

Tom Mauser, a gun-control advocate whose son Daniel was killed at Columbine High School in 1999, said he wasn't surprised by the numbers.

"To me that's just symbolic of the fear that drives (people)," he said.

State Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, said she understands what people are thinking when they walk into a gun shop. But she hopes buying a gun isn't the only response people have.

She would also like to see Congress reinstate an assault-weapons ban, and she said Colorado should look into other measures that could prevent tragedies like Friday's shooting.

"I think that's what the conversation needs to be," she said. "I don't think that to be preventative, we need to provide or have more guns."

Survivors of the Aurora theater shooting who were taken to Medical Center of Aurora and remain there since Thursday got a visit Sunday from several Denver Broncos players.

Six players — Eric Decker, Ryan Clady, Chris Kuper, Joe Mays, Jacob Tamme and Ben Garland — plus recently retired safety Brian Dawkins, met with four survivors and their families.

The players also talked with emergency room and ICU staff, thanking them for their response and care.

Kuper, too, got into a laugh with one of the survivors, Casey Rottman, who is a former college football player who played against Kuper in a college playoff game.

Turns out, Kuper’s North Dakota beat Rottman’s Winona State team in a playoff game.

Quarterback Peyton Manning also spent time Sunday afternoon calling families of shooting victims, as well as some survivors who remain hospitalized. Manning was among the first Broncos players to reach out to help.

Tamme tweeted about the visit to the Aurora hospital:

Wrote Tamme: “Wow. I’ve got to tell ya, that visit was simply incredible. Had no idea what to expect walking in those doors. But the staff, victims, & families were so impressive. The loss of life is so tragic, but the spirit, resolve, & gratitude in that hospital was just awesome. So many amazing stories of heroism.”

He continued: “A man shot in the leg telling the story of the 17 year old girl who stopped as others ran by & used her belt as a tourniquet on his leg. Nurses bragging on doctors, & doctors bragging on nurses. One doctor had no time to wait for an OR & began surgery in middle of the ER. Another victim and his friend jumped on the friends wife, and he took a bullet in the arm and leg. Met all 3 of them. Just incredible.

Tamme continued: Still some in critical condition, but amid all the chaos at Aurora Medical that morning, no loss of life… Outstanding job. One of their folks told us they started multiple surgeries within 10-15 minutes of a victim coming in the doors.”

Tamme also wrote about several of the patients he and the other Broncos players met:

Tamme: “Haven’t even mentioned a guy most of you have seen on tv, Steve, who was on the cross country bicycle trip with his buddy. They were on an overnight stay in Denver preparing to cross the Rockies. He was shot in the neck. Now they plan to come back. next year and finish the trip, hopefully raising money for charity. I was getting chills during our whole visit with them. Bottom line, this is still a tragic story due to the awful loss of life. But it was great to see these folks who showed such courage. and, for a couple hrs in that hospital, no one spoke about a madman, but instead they told the stories that give u faith in humanity.”

Decker added, via Twitter: “What a perspective visiting a few victims today at the hospital. Amazing people in good spirit! A testament to their courage and resiliency.”

From Dawkins: “Just left the Aurora Medical Center. Got a chance 2 thank the Wonderful Emergency team. & C a couple of the brave victims & thr loving Families. After leaving there, one thing I will defiantly do is hug my wife & kids when I get home. & squeeze them em tighter!!!!”

From Garland: “Just finished visiting victims of the theater shooting it was inspiring to see their resiliency. Wishing them a full and speedy recovery.”

I hope people don't turn this thing into a "Denver Broncos must win one for the gipper" thing.

I feel very sorry for these people. But I still hate the Broncos.

Moveover, I can't root for the Broncos under any circumstances, unless they play the Raiders. Then I root for a triple overtime tie with lots of injuries on both sides.

Heard on the news this morning that he was under a special government scholarship. His school was paid for and $26000 per year to live on.

Now they are questioning if he used his government money to purchase weapons to kill those people.

Brown has hired attorney Donald Karpel to rep him. Karpel tells TMZ ... he is targeting 3 defendants.

1. The theater. Karpel claims it was negligent for the theater to have an emergency door in the front that was not alarmed or guarded. It's widely believed Holmes entered the theater with a ticket, propped the emergency door open from inside, went to his car and returned with guns

2. Holmes' doctors. Karpel says it appears Holmes was on several medications -- prescribed by one or more doctors -- at the time of the shooting and he believes the docs did not properly monitor Holmes.

3. Warner Bros. Karpel says "Dark Knight Rises" was particularly violent and Holmes mimicked some of the action. The attorney says theater goers were helpless because they thought the shooter was part of the movie. Karpel tells TMZ, "Somebody has to be responsible for the rampant violence that is shown today."

We could probably start by refusing to buy tickets to these types of movies.

Um, yea, someone is responsible and the police have him in custody, but he doesn’t have deep enough pockets for Karpel to go after, apparently.
