I said it before we drafted Mahomes and I said it again after we drafted Mahomes.
This is Alex's team in 2017 and I'm perfectly fine with that. I hope he succeeds....not just because I'm a fan of this team and I want them to win but also because I don't want to send a high draft pick to the Bills next year. This team has the talent to have a winning season and to make it to the playoffs. It's going to be up to Alex on whether or not this affects him negatively or positively. Does Mahomes push him to take more chances? Or will he be thinking about next year while he's out there and not play well? That's going to be on him. |

If we won a Superbowl with Alex....then what you would see is him starting in 2018 and Mahomes waiting for the moment that Smith declines that season.

There's no reason at all to root against Alex Smith anymore.
The die is cast. Even if the Chiefs win a Super Bowl with Smith, he's gone after '18 because the structure of the other contracts on the team (and the pending FA of guys like Peters) will make it virtually impossible to continue to carry Smith at $18 millionish. Root for Smith to win a championship. And then if that happens Pest is right - he'll be back, but so what? He'll have earned that right and I'll have probably orgasmed to death anyway. Of course we should root for Alex Smith - that's self-evident. The Chiefs have chosen their future and there's not a hell of a lot Smith can do one way or the other to change that path. He gets 1 year. 2 if he wins a conference championship, IMO. That's it and that's all.

The Chiefs winning the SB is the worst thing you can imagine?

I believe (hope) that someone is being a bit sarcastic there.
Honestly, if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, I wouldn't expect Alex to retire, but I wouldn't be shocked by it either. But it's the Chiefs we're talking about so I wouldn't get too worried about the prospect...

The Chiefs making the SB earns Alex a job in 2018 IMO. That won't happen bc the Patriots are fielding their best team in years and Alex can't beat real playoff teams with this team, but yeah I do think that just getting to the SB is enough to bring Alex back.
I really really hope Alex has one of his best years. We can absolutely get a 2 for him from some team in that scenario. |

Alex is under contract until like 2019, so we wouldn't have to resign him anyway.

Alex Smith has a lot to play for. The dude has had a nice career. He's been a good QB in KC. He's been a winning QB in KC. He's going to want another opportunity next season, so its in his best interest to do well.
Perhaps we should have had a developmental QB in here pushing Alex sooner. |

The Chiefs ending up at 6-10 could be the best thing to happen.
They get a higher pick in the 2nd round next year to lessen the sting of trading their 1st. They get an easier schedule in 2018 for Mahomes to play against. And there will be absolutely no question what to do with that $20 mil owed Alex Smith. 2017 just a 16-game preseason for 2018. |

I will also add-- I really, truly do hope that Smith lets the Mahomes situation evolve his approach on the field. Alex can't become more talented, but he can just make the decision to throw the ball down the field more, because what the hell else does he have to lose.
The only way the Chiefs get better (or more dangerous in the playoffs) under Smith is if he is willing to consistently challenge the secondaries down the field. Defenses don't respect that aspect of our offense right now (and never have under Alex), and it causes the run game, pass game, the whole damn offense to suffer. Now he has a kid behind him who would immediately flip that narrative on its head. Whenever Mahomes is ready, defenses are facing a QB who can make any throw from any spot. So, the way I see it, Alex would be an absolute fool to not let it fly this year. Now that the replacement is under development, he knows the clock has nearly struck midnight on his tenure in KC. |

Yeah, very few teams just blow through the door without knocking on it first. Hopefully some of these post-season failures and some changes up front will at least convince the DL to show up this time around. Smith has really put a ceiling on the offense in the post-season but we know what he is. But my biggest disappointment by FAR in the last two post-seasons has been the completely ineffective play of our defensive line.
