The thing that's made Brady a double pain in the ass over the years is that he's leaving $10 million+ in cash/cap on the table every year because the money is immaterial for him. So when the Pats go sign Stephon Gilmore and throw an offer sheet at Gillislee while trading for Cooks because they have more than enough space for ALL of that, it's because they have Brady making $10+ million less than he could be. Brady's contract made it possible to get those guys. It doesn't matter what Belichick does to prepare - if Brady is truly starting to slide a bit, there's nothing in the world that will make up for it. His value goes beyond just his ability, it's the players that Brady's constant 'discounts' allows the Patriots to get as well.

It was inevitable. Frankly, even with 5 they've gotta feel like they left a SN or two in the table. Freaking dynasty and I hope it finally ends |

I also think the hurry up offense that worked so well for the Patriots is also the same thing that killed them. They had no energy in the second half and the chiefs just did anything they wanted. Probably not a good idea to run a hurry up offense first game of the season especially when starters played about 4 combined drives in the preseason.

The Chiefs were down and deep in their own territory. The Pats hadn't lost a game they took a lead into the 4th quarter during Brady's entire career and NE had seemingly started to gain some momentum on offense even if they couldn't quite finish off drives. And then came the throw to Hunt. It's impossible to overstate the impact of that play - just enormous. Another punt back to NE may have been all it took to turn that game around. Instead Smith stands in the pocket and delivers a friggen strike to Hunt completely in-stride (which is good because that DE he was matched up against was still gaining ground on him before he failed on his tackle attempt; if that ball is placed 6 inches in any direction from where it was, it's not a TD.) That's why I'm trying not to get too high over the W. The Pats showed nothing defensively and their QB wasn't clicking. His top 2 WRs were down with injuries and the rest were inexperienced. And despite all that, they had a lead in the 4th and if that throw isn't absolutely perfect things could be very different. So it demonstrates two points - 1) Let's not start sucking each other's dicks just yet. 2) That play that many of us always say could be the 'one play that pulls a game from the fire' that Smith so often didn't make, got made here and that's what changed it. All the "but Drops!" and "run defense" etc, etc... can kinda go by the wayside if you just make that one big goddamn play at the exact moment you need to make it. Spectacular throw and really a spectacular game all around.

Some of those plays are just a symphony of coaching awesomeness.
Soren said it today and got it right - Andy Reid will get a guy 'high school open' through pure scheme at least once or twice a game. Those times where the play design is just so damn clever that suddenly things open up. That rocket toss for Hunt's TD run? That was off a similar concept as those shovel passes and you have to believe all those in the back of their minds held up those LBers a little. The deep throw to Hunt - anyone notice what Hill was up to? He was strictly a decoy designed to pull the safety out of the middle. Safety crashes up to spy Hill in the flats and the middle comes wide open for Hunt to fly up the seam. Hill's TD wasn't quite so clever; that was just McCourty eating shit in cover 2 and biting on Kelce (wonder if they saw something on tape there). Reid's just a hell of a coach, fellas. The guy is mortal and has his annoying quirks like anyone else, but the big ol' boy is always playing chess out there. My worry is that Matt Nagy is going to be a damn good HC in this league and Reid won't want to leave before Nagy gets offered a job. I'd love to see Reid helm the ship for another 3-4 years (ideally win a title in there) then turn the reins over to Nagy.

Hey now, I said he'd get about 1,200 yards of total offense. I didn't say he'd suck and I said I really liked his vision and ability to catch out of the backfield.
But admittedly, I damn sure didn't see him doing what he did tonight And again, my biggest worry was straight line speed and let's not act like Marsh wasn't gaining on him or that McCourty didn't gain 5 yards in the span of 15 on that long run in the 4th; the cat ain't fast. That said, he's elusive as hell. He's the same type of back I thought he'd be, he just appears to be a much better version of it. I figured Tomas Rawls and last night he looked like Faulk if he had a couple early knee injuries. Did not see that coming.

Pats were 102-1 when leading by 10 points at home since the 2001 season.

I was excited about drafting Hunt because I felt his outstanding vision and balance would trump his lack of breakaway speed. I think most coaches expect the running game to to pick up 4-5 yards, wear out the defense and shorten the clock, not rip off 80 yard TD runs. Add in Hunt's pass catching ability and I feel you have a perfect Andy Reid RB. You said: Quote:
which looks like you are basically bashing him for not being Charles. However, if Hunt is more Priest than Charles, I'm perfectly fine with that. |
