LNBS: What if Dorsey extends Alex for 3-4 years at backup compensation...

Please read op before voting.

I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

Cap hits by year (projected)

10
13
7
7

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

He threw a fit in San Fran for that reason and he will do the same here when the time comes next year with a year left on his contract, he will want to be traded or cut so he can start somewhere.

I disagree. I think his relationship with Andy Reid he would do whatever Andy Reid asks of him to do. Also at his point in career probably doesn't want start all over trying impress new coach when he can't.

Once Alex loses his job to Mahomes, he has ZERO place on the roster. He's nothing more than a distraction at that point, he needs to be removed.

He may continue to have a good relationship with Reid, but doubt they'll be BFF after Reid trades up for a younger sexier model. He'll either retire or try and play a couple more years for a team where he'll start. The only way I see him as a Chief after Mahomes takes over is as an assistant coach.

I don't think that carries any weight when dealing with millionaire athletes and their egos.

Alex and Andy will probably always like each other but when it comes down to it they will part ways if it means Alex loses his starting job. Andy literally basically just said that on Mike & Mike on ESPN. He said he called Alex before the draft and said we are taking a QB, you worry about this year, but when the time comes we are looking to the future.

That meanss Alex is the present, he's literally got one shot this year to showcase his talents, get as far as he can, and hope another team likes that enough to want him as a starter to keep their franchise afloat.

But that's the thing what team could possibly want him being starting quarterback? Even if we cut him after 17 and he is a FA teams will be drafting a high end draft class so he will either be a "bridge" or compete against younger talent with moxy.

There is still a chance him getting a nasty concussion that would dictate his future. Only cuz of his history he is prone to get one.

Alex can find another starting job around this league. Quite a few teams are absolutely terrible at QB.

You honestly think Alex Smith is just gonna lay over and accept a backup position w/ backup pay? .

This isn't Madden.

$10 million and $13 million aren't backup pay. That's halfway inbetween starter and backup money. He's not ****ing worth that.
