PFF Rates Flowers #1 NFL CB Through Week 6

... and Reid says scheme fit wasnt the biggest reason he was let go. He did say he was happy to see him doing well and I can agree with that, I never had a problem with Flowers outside of my, apparently somewhat wrong, belief that he was a bad scheme fit.

There isnt much other Chiefs discussion going on, so heres something else to get mad at each other about...

"He's too small and slow!" Uhh, then how was he performing like one of the best CBS in the league?
I liked Flowers. I thought he played well but under no circumstances would I trust him to lock down a top receiver. He would make plays for us, but not consistently.

Maybe not on the tail end of his time here but in 2010 and 2011? There wouldn't have been many better options.

There are two truths here:

1) Flowers was being overpaid in KC.

2) If Flowers were on this team today he'd still be our best CB.

Even if he were here I don't think it would have made a difference. Dorsey treated this offseason like an angry Madden Franchise owner dumping high cap number players...

You are always better off keeping the guy you developed.
It can speak to coaching competency though. Do you have a coach that is married to his system or can he adjust and do what the players he is given do best? Sproles going to NO confirmed what many SD fans thought in SD; that Norv didn't know how to use him. At the same time, many fans wanted Rivers to be going no huddle and calling the shots at the line. Norv's system worked well with superior personnel, but when that left so did the success. The talent isnt as good as the early Norv years, but a coach that adapts to the player's strengths has them playing better than those more talented teams.

Flowers has played well against some of the worst quarterbacks in the league. Smith has played well against some of the best in the league. I don't buy that Flowers would be the best if he was still here. Especially since he'd be playing against the starting two WR rather than the slot and 3rd best WRs he's playing against in SD.

ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer believes 2014 could be CB Brandon Carr's last season in Dallas.

Carr was dreadful in 2013, but he was uncomfortable playing ex-DC Monte Kiffin's zone coverage. New DC Rod Marinelli will employ more of Carr's preferred man coverage, but Carr has never been an elite cornerback. It is doubtful that changes now. Dallas will likely be moving on after this season.

Passing

Ryan Tannehill had a fine day and posted a career high in quarterback rating but was still 0-for-3 on passes of 20-plus yards. He was, however, 7-for-9 on the intermediate 10-19-yard throws for 143 yards and two of his three TD passes.

Tannehill was very strong in all facets Sunday, but when the Chargers did not send the blitz, he went 15-for-19 with 202 yards and a TD.

Tannehill wasn't afraid to target San Diego's top corner, Brandon Flowers. He completed 5 of 8 targeted passes against Flowers to three different receivers for 61 yards and a TD.

Called this when we released him. I guess we are doing OK without him though. I still think our secondary is a house of cards, though.

Sean Smith is the 7th ranked CB on pff today and has been playing really well. Gaines has been very good as well.

I would take these two over flowers based in their play this season.

Its all about the pass rush right now, if it holds up... the secondary holds up.

Not gonna lie. This could be a lot like Carolina's secondary last yr. Their pass rush made them look good.

We'll find out how good our Cb's are when we play Manning again.

More evidence that there are only a few positions that are important enough to blow a bunch of money on.

Brandon Flowers is a nice player at 3M but not at what we were paying him.

Brandon Flowers was asked to play safety in the current Chiefs scheme. He refused and was cut, which saved $7.5 million in cap space in both 2014 and 2015.

While he may be a capable CB when healthy, he's had issues the past few seasons with injury and this year is no different. If his cap number was $3 million, I'm sure he'd still be with the Chiefs but it appears to me that he wanted out of KC, otherwise, he'd have renegotiated his contract.

The Chiefs have been just fine this season with Sean Smith, Gaines, Owens, Cooper and Fleming.
