But remember, it's much easier to run with the threat of a great QB and passing attack which Indy has and the Browns do not.

Now Richardson and luck are free agents at the same time, added to Indus spending spree this offseason, they're extremely win now

With no signing bonus to accelerate against their cap, they have a lot of flexibility in how they approach Richardson's potential FA status over the next year or so. This doesn't strike me as a win-now issue at all.

Since Richardson was a first rounder, he's automatically locked in for four years, IIRC. Indy will have the option at the end of this season to extend him to year five.

Added to the spending spree they had this offseason on, IMO, mediocre players, I don't think it's a good idea

You'll have to forgive Browns fans if they're skeptical of it all, but in theory it's a good move.

Something that adds value to the Colts that some may not be considering is that the Browns are eating his signing bonus and it's cap figure.
In other words, the Colts will get Richardson for the next 3 years and only his base salary will count against the cap. 1.32 mil 2.25 mil 3.18 mil Folks - that's a damn cheap runningback. Lynch was cheap because he was on the last year of his deal and the Hawks would have to pay to extend him. Maybe you think Richardson's overrated, but he's still probably no worse than an average starting RB and he does have some potential to improve. To get that guy at a total cost of about $6 million over the next 3 seasons is pretty damn nice. I think Richardson has the ability to be a very good RB still. I could be wrong, obviously, but he's shown good hands at times, good burst at times and great power at times. He needs to put the three together, to be sure, but that's better than simply lacking any of those skills. It's funny that Dane mentions Lynch because Marshawn had the exact same rap that many are now putting on Richardson - he was seen as a plodder; a JAG guy that will get what is blocked and nothing more. Once he was put in a nice spot, he excelled. I think getting him in Indy where teams have to respect the pass a little more will allow him to thrive. We shall see.

I should be noted that Seattle has an elite or near elite offensive line, whereas the Colts have a Division II offensive line.

Gosder Cherilus is a good player and, IMO, one of the better RTs in football. Granted, he's better in pass-pro than in run, but he's solid. Castonzo is...well I don't know really. At times he's looked horrid but at times he's looked very very good. In the end, I think he's just a very young but still very talented LT. I think he's on the upswing. Satele is a solid C. He's not elite, but he's no worse than average and perhaps a little better than that. Donald Thomas was a very good G over the last couple of years in NE. He's been a key reserve and a solid player for them. He's a plus G, thought not an amazing one. He's a bit of an unknown because last year was the first time he got starters reps, but he's certainly not done anything to suggest he isn't going to be a solid starter. McGlynn....yeah, you got me there - he sucks. The Colts don't have a bad O-line, they just don't have an amazing one. But in the end, give me an average O-line with 7 in the box over an amazing O-line with 8 or sometimes 9 in the box every single time.

Cherlius is an upgrade but they have issues at every spot. Satele has been on at least three teams now and he's no better than average, at best. They have significant problems and I have a hard time believing that T.R. will exceed his 3.5 per carry average this season. |
