So you are telling me that blacks didn't get certain jobs because of the color of their skin? How long did people say that blacks couldn't be quarterbacks? Are you in denial? How many talented blacks get looked over because no one wanted to rock the good ol' boy boat? Awareness of examples of successful role models helps insprire kids. Black kids aren't any different than white kids in that way. There are plenty of things that kids don't have the confidence that they can achieve. Role models help move kids to do great things. That doesn't just happen on it's own.

Wow, then these kids must have low self-esteem. I don't need to see someone do something to let me know it's "okay" for me to do it because he did it.

Either that, or I have a bigger than average ego.

And where are the parents? Don't their parents show them that they can do anything if they put their minds to it? Dang.

The thing about it that gets me is... kids don't know what a successful role model is supposed to be these days....

The average young black kid would be more inclined to look up to Michael Vick or T.O., than he would Tony Dungy or Lovie Smith. That's why I won't bitch about them making a big deal about this situation... If this one situation can give a young black kid a role model other than a rapper or sports thug, then it's probably a good thing.

Okay, so my mom calls me today. She asked if I saw the game last night. I say yes. She says she's happy that the "blue team" won, since they'd never been to a Super Bowl. I'm rolling my eyes at this point. She's also happy the Bears got in because it'd been so long. I asked her if she'd ever root for KC in that scenario (she doesn't like the Chiefs). She said she might have to if they could ever make it past the playoffs.

Anyway, she goes on two tell me about the historic event of there being two African American head coaches in the Super Bowl. I told her that the QB's were both white. She said, "So?" I told her that's exactly my sentiment about the coach thing. It doesn't matter. I hate the media.

Vanilla, that's the point you are missing. Do you have kids? I have 4 kids 3 girls and one boy and its tough out there. Kids aren't like they use to be. They fight on a dime, they are having kids way to early and you also have these parents that are young themselves and don't know how to raise them. So when you have a kid out there that is raised poorly and has no male role model in his life, its HARD. My first post was wrong because I said it would help black kids, but thats what I know. Jaz was right it should help any kid that needs that needs a role model black or white.

Because in some ways all humans are basically simplistic creatures who understand that which they can relate to. In an exaggerated sense, t's the same reason that my son would have a lot harder time looking up to a rattle snake as a role model. In a less exaggerated sense, it's why a boy needs a father as a role model.

It doesn't have to be about color. But with today's media that's what we get... that's the juiciest angle for them and generates the biggest response, so we're stuck with it. I think the majority can agree that it "shouldn't" be about color, but our society is still hung up on it. And because our society is still hung up on it, young kids are going to look toward people of their own race first for role models. That's not right, but we're not going to change that social mindset before the SB, so what's the harm in using this as an opportunity to show kids that anybody can make it to the top and be a SB coach?

It's not that it's "okay". It's that it's not "impossible" or "a waste of time". The parents of the sorts of kids we are talking about likely had crappy role models as well.
