Why not get another Civic? The new ones are great, especially the new Si.
It's got the same engine as the one I have in my car, and I get over 325 miles to the tank. I own 3 GMs. I'll never buy another one. Resale value that drops like a rock and the reliability of marrying a porn star. |

Just looking, haven't read the thread yet, but thought I would give my totally drunken opinion (glad Firefox has a built in spell check now).
I bought a 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara for $17,000 brand new. It is now 3 years and 3 months old. It has 119,000 miles on it. It gets 24 mpg highway (pretty much all I drive). The manufacturer recommended time between oil changes is 7500 miles, one helluva incentice. At 104,000 miles I replaced the clutch for $600 at a Suzuki dealership. It still drives the exact same way as when I took it off the lot. I figure that over 200,000 miles (this thing is a rock, and I don't expect any more repairs before 200k), this car will have cost me 17,000 original, 600 clutch, 1400 oil changes (full synthetic); for a total of $19,000. That's $10.53 per mile + gas. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle to take me to work every day (135+ miles round trip), that was cheap. Again, I'm not rating for or against other vehicles, just providing the experiences of my current vehicle for your review. While it has been a rock solid performer (got a free rental for the 2 days it was getting the clutch replaced), it is definitely a "cheap" vehicle. It will easily do 200,000 miles from what I can tell so far, and will be by far, the cheapest per mile vehicle I have ever owned. DISCLAIMER: The new GV is the old XL-7 unit (2.7 liter engine), which I assume is just as durable. The new XL-7 is made with a GM engine, and I have no idea its durability, but wouldn't test with my own $$$. Conclusion: There is probably no other vehicle cheaper than the '03 GV that could have gotten me to and from work (130+ miles) every day in snow storms. Would I buy again: Only if I expected to put 20k+ miles a year on it. Yes it is durable and a proven performer, but I do not plan on living 65+ miles from the office again. |
