How are we going to replace TG from the draft?

We have to wait until tomorrow until Chiefs pick again. WIth the remaining picks can they fill the void on offense that was left after trading TG?

Are there sleepers out there in the later rounds that can replace future HOFer TG?

We have Cassel, LJ, and Bowe. This does not look like a powerhouse offense.

Looks like we are not going to put a lot of points on the board.

Looks like we will have to wait until next year's draft to get some offensive weapons. Looks like we'll have at least a top 10 pick maybe even another top 5 unfortunately.

I'm interested in seeing what our Offense will look like this year. It doesn't look great right now.

The Broncos made a bad trade.

That doesn't change the FACT that for the last 25 years, AT LEAST, a pick in next year's draft has one full round less value as the same round's pick this year.

I agree to an extent, but Mayock called this the worst draft class in a long time, so in essence we were probably better off trading Tony for a 2 next year then this year. Of couse we can't say for sure until we see where the Falcons finish, but if everything was equal and given the current state of the Chiefs that might have been a better move.

I guess once Pioli traded TG for a 2nd round pick in 2010 any chance of a winning season in 2009 went with him.

Looking forward to seeing play makers again on offense for the Chiefs.

Hopefully next year.

Absolutely. If you have TIME, then a 2nd next year has more value to YOU than a 3rd this year. The problem is that most GM's don't have time, they need to WIN, so they need picks right now.

But in the end, Tony got exactly what most thought he would - a 3rd rounder.

It doesn't change the fact that the trade they made was consistent with the draft value chart.

They just took an unheralded player.

No one knows how Smith will fare in the NFL.
Heralded or unheralded.
That was a bad trade. They just forfeited the higher of their two #1's.

Again, my ideas about future draft pick values are hardly unique.
Read the Massey & Thaler NFL draft study.
They address what future picks and how they devalue.

We have much more pressing needs than TE.

You're talking about theory.

I'm talking about PRACTICE.

NFL GM's set the value of draft picks by their actions, regardless of whether those values are based in logic or reason.

Denver traded what amounts to a 2nd round pick, period.

Furthermore, if they tank and next year's draft sets up like this one, they may have made a GREAT trade, because they don't have to worry about reaching and overpaying or getting bent over like the Browns.

I think we did the best with our 1 pick on the first day. This is going to be a 2 year process and we all have to face this reality.

We most likely will have a Top 5 or 10 pick in next year's draft with 3 picks on the first day and 5 more on the second day. Pioli is setting this up nicely.

After evaluating this team Pioli has to be patient and take his lumps this season with massively stepping up in 2010.

Hopefully we can win more than 2 games in 2009.

Still hoping we find some great players in the later rounds.

If it were that simple there'd be no discussion of how Cleveland got the short end of the trade-down-stick.

GM's/Coaches often stray from the values assigned and held by the chart.
They also stray from what may be logical or reasonable (as you stated).

That's an oversimplification.
In truth, they've given up what will probably be Top 15 talent next season.
That's dumb. And I'm not the only person that recognizes that. Otherwise why would Seattle so readily accept a "devalued" pick? To do Denver a favor?

The other factor regarding Pioli is that he will have to find value where no one is looking or expecting there is value. Players through free agency moves and developing late round players in the draft as well as undrafted players. This is how he did it in NE and will continue this tradition in KC.

So we may all be pleasantly surprised in 2009.
