Why do you go to a bar/pub/club for the first time?

Ok about to run a "focus group" with some bar owner friends and I want to see if what they THINK brings people into their bars is really the reason....

Would really appreciate you guys telling me what FIRST brings you into a "new" bar and once we have enough ideas I will start a poll...

I know a few obvious ones... know someone who works there. Went to see a band you like. Went to meet friends who already hang there. What else do we have?

(Once we have this sorted out, we'll do another poll on why you come back to particular bars after that first visit)

Name and location for me as usually a sports bar will have something in the name that attracts me there the first time because I have passion for "sports bars" and want to check out as many as possible.

atmosphere would have to be the first. And having never gone to a particular place, I base that on the reputation of the place, from friends radio etc,,

Usually from word of mouth, and where people my age tend to hang out. The main bars I go to are ones that are a common hangout for a younger crowd and they usually play music that I like.

One big draw that might bring me to a bar that I otherwise wouldn't go to is pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, etc.

When I was single I would go to where I thought I would have the best chance of meeting women but that has since changed as I am no longer single. Still go to the same places, just not as often and for a different reason. I just enjoy the bar scene.

Location, signage, entry/exit convenience. Once you have those, the band, the hottie bartenders/waitress, the kick ass weekend band lineup are all candy.

This. I have not been to a bar in a good 20 years. At least not a "real" bar. The occasional brewpub-lunchspot, sure. The bar at Pizzeria Uno's at lunch. But not a real, "pick up chicks and dance and get wasted" bar.

And it's a good point. Normally in a thread, if someone just posts something contrary (e.g. going into the Olympic or MMA or college basketball threads just to say "I hate it"), it's annoying. But in this case, it's indicative. I think, IIRC Austin, you said you were working on some sort of bar game or something? I'm sure the target audience for that is, well, people at a bar ('cause people who are drinking are always good for parting with their cash, LOL). So you're thinking up ways to get people into one. But this points out that a lot of people don't go to them. It's a good thing to remember for stage two ("how to get this product more widespread"). Basically, a good example of this, if I think I know what you're driving at, is Dave & Buster's.

Theme and perception.

People are creatures of habit. For me to go to a new bar it has to have a theme that I'm interested in. I believe that the theme can be portrayed through name, advertisement, and to a certain extent location. Also, perception is very important to me. Before deciding to go I have a perceived demograph in mind and a perceived expectation. Location, name, type of advertisement, and advertisement media all factor into my formed perception.

That's to get me in the door. Environment, ease of location, quality of product, and prices is what will get me to return.
