Hypothetical: you get rich. What next?

Here's the back story for the forthcoming poll.

You, a rabbi, a horse, the pope, a blonde, a termite, a 12-inch pianist, a frog, and a monk go into a bar. You're enjoying your drinks/fodder/wood/flies and watching a replay of the 1972 World Series when a commercial break occurs.

It's Powerball time!

They draw the numbers - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and Powerball 32 - and the monk starts screaming. Those are the numbers he always plays, because 1 is the number of popes, 2 is the number of cardinals, 4 is the number of bishops, 8 is the number of books in the bible, 16 is the number of apostles, 32 is because O.J. Simpson is his favorite football player.

Truthfully, he became a monk because he didn't have aptitude for most other professions.

So he's all happy, but then remembers a problem. He has taken a vow of poverty. He can't keep the money. He has to give it away immediately or risk the wrath of God.

The rabbi suggests giving it to that Nazi-hunting guy's organization, the horse suggests a scholarship in Barbaro's name, the pope suggests adding it to the untold billions in his secret vault at the Vatican, the blonde is under the table performing oral sex on the monk and can't talk other than waving her left ring finger around, the termite suggests planting a forest of redwoods, the 12-inch pianist wants it for enlargement surgery, and the frog suggests starting up the world's largest maggot incubator. You humbly suggest that he give the money to you.

The monk ponders these suggestions, then collapses and dies of a major heart attack. In the ensuing scuffle, you clock the pope in the face, crush the termite, and elbow your way out of the bar with the winning ticket, setting the bar afire as you leave to eliminate any witnesses.

You turn in the winning ticket and get one of those giant checks, which you immediately cash and convert to safe investments paying an annual return of 5.4 percent per annum. For the rest of your natural days, you will receive annual payments after taxes of $1.2 million.

What do you do next with your life? Assume that you can only pursue one of these options as your main pursuit and focus in life, and that it will fill the bulk of the 40+ hours that you now spend working.

Option 1. Keep the job, no major lifestyle changes, building a fortune to give to your heirs or something.

Option 2. Start a business venture that you think is promising and interesting.

Option 3. Get actively involved in political issues as a funder or activist.

Option 4. Get involved in one or more charities, spending time and money to address a social issue.

Option 5. Pursue a hobby career to make money/have success, like music or writing.

Option 6. Pursue a non-moneymaking hobby avidly, like games or Bigfoot research or bodybuilding.

Option 7. Just putter around and don't do anything overly productive - watch TV, play games, travel, etc.

Option 8. I'd probably be destructive and lose it on hookers, whiskey, drugs, etc.

Option 9. Other (Please 'splain yourself, Lucy.)

I go back to school for a doctrine in philosophy and or masters in art education.

I have a charity idea that I'd employ on my own. to promote humanity in some small way.

I would start a small bar that my wife and I could run basically ourselves with minimal employee support

I would set up college accounts for my boys, give everyone in my immediate family a couple hundred thousand, any of you that have been nice to me would get ten grand, all of you who are asses would also get a check for ten grand, but I'd pay the extra to stop payment on them.

I would get box seats for all the chiefs home games and have give aways for who could go watch for free.

Id probably go to alot more cards games.

First off, am I M5 rich or Veyron rich? 'Cause that's item one on the agenda.

Next would be a prolonged fitness regimen, nothing but hypernutritional foods and tons of biking, jogging, and weighlifting for at least a couple of months, maybe 6 months to a year depending on results.

Then I'd probably go for some pro bono public defending and indigent legal services, assuming that the riches I get are sufficient for a life of comfort.

Oh, and I'd probably move to Manhattan. It'd be pretty cool to be able to walk to, or have come to me, everything I could ever crave. Though I'd have to see if biking Central Park is as good or better than biking Forest Park.

Option 5. Which, although I am very far from being rich, is something that my stupid ass is pursuing right now anyway.

Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.

(Well, not all chicks.)

Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.

Rich people participating in politics are there to protect their own interest. It's theirs to lose. I'd really doubt that they were into it because they want to improve the over all situation of the society. Some, albeit a few, are sincere. However, the rest are not.

I'd start a good business to secure the future of my offspring. I'd do a lot of traveling as well and will do my best to make sure I change the lives of people who never thought they'd get a second chance.

Not really an answer but I think you will understand.

Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars?

Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man: two chicks at the same time, man.

Peter Gibbons: Good point.

I picked other.

I would try to keep working at my job, which I really do enjoy. After helping family as much as I feel is appropriate, I would up my lifestyle only just a bit, but most of it would be saved for a nice retirement and charity.

As I said, I would try to do that, but if it became impossible to work because of constantly being bugged about money and/or resentment at "the rich guy sitting in that cubicle", then I'd reluctantly retire and go work for a charity.

I would also try to stay in the nice little starter home I'm at now because I see no need to ever "upgrade", unless it became impossible to live in the neighborhood and I had to move to a gated community for security reasons.

In other words, I'd pretty much try to go on as I'm going on, with only a few extra perks and nice vacations until I retire (probably early). I like my job, I'm way too young to stop being productive, and I'm pretty much doing what I believe I'm best at now: helping a gigantic evil insurance company make more money.

I would first pay off my debt then buy a house in Manhattan kansas that two stories and a deck on the second floor to cover with glass so i can watch tv while people walk by. A underground shelter that would be use as a party cave so we don't wake up the neighbors and use it to raise money for charity. Finally i would date a blonde and a redhead. At the same time.

Jenson--

I am attempting Polyface farm, here in South Dakota. Course I have to keep my Professorship to make it work now, but I retire soon and the farm will be my retirement...Gene Logsdon also has a place in Ohio like Salatin in VA. "The Contrary Farmer" is one of my favorite books. I keep chickens, pigs, a horse or two, and plant a couple of acres in garden.

If I won the lottery I would buy as much of the Black Hills as I could and deed it back to the Lakota....I guess that is option 3...

and continue on with my life.
