English Bulldog Breeder

I am just starting the process of getting my boy an English Bully. They have everyone convinced out here they need at least $2,500 to get a good one. I know that's just not the case nationally. If anyone knows where I can get a really great bully at a good price please let me know. Just throwing that out there.

Couple things to know about English Bulldogs. For a dog of their height they are very powerful and solidly built. Bender weighs 60 pounds and has zero fat on him. He's a little tank. He has taken out my kids and my wife a few times by running into them. He'd rather go through you than around you. Bulldogs are prone to both of those things. Bulldogs have a VERY active digestive system. His gas is audible and can clear a room. Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat and overheat very easily. We live in Virginia and keep ours inside on very hot days. When he's outside in the Summer we keep a small kiddie pool filled for him. When he gets hot he goes and lays in it to cool off. Also be mindful that Bulldogs are physically unable to swim.

If you decide to spend the money (I know it's a lot but I feel like it was totally worth every penny) know you're getting a great breed but you'll have to put up with some potential health problems.

Cool, thanks for the help. I just got an email back from a friends sister who competes with her dogs and is at the top of the Bulldog Club of California. She has been a member for over 25 years and is going to help me out. If I do spend the money I know I am getting the best of the best from a healthy line. If not she will just hook me up with one of the rescue dogs. Thanks again everyone for your input.

I'm in the market for one but am trying to not go higher than $1500-2000. I've started emailing a few breeders in the area, but most are quoting $2500-3000 right now.

How serious should AKC pedigree charts be taken? Is it as simple as the more champions in its lineage, the better/healthier the dog is likely to be? Can these papers be manipulated and or fraudulent?

yes. paper hangers are a dime a dozen. Great bred dogs have titles all the way through the ped. not just up front.

Great bred dogs will cost you 10k.

All dogs are good and there are many that need a good home at the pound.

This argument is so stupid.

Different people have different priorities. For me, I like the temperment and looks of an English Bully, and given the breed's health issues I want to buy one from a high quality breeder where I can be reasonably assured undesirable traits have not been passed on.

No. I started and then got discouraged at the prices people were asking for what I wanted. I am convinced that English and French bullies are at their peak right now and expect them to come down. That being said I won't pick this up again until late fall at the earlies. Family will do a lot of traveling this summer.

I'm raising my 4th lab and my first 'high dollar' one.

I can say that he's almost certainly going to be the best dog we have. He won't be my favorite (that title will belong to my first boy for as long as we have him), but he has pretty much managed to combine every ideal trait of the other dogs I've ever had. He's just a fantastic dog (and he's a handsome ol' boy to boot).

Remember - the good breeders are respected throughout the industry so they're easy to find. Moreover, they train for temperament as much as they train for looks, etc... Nothing's ironclad, but you're likely to get a well-mannered and very intelligent pup if you're going through reputable breeder.

That alone makes them worth the extra coin. I'm going to have this furry heathen in my home for the next decade, I'll go ahead and chip in an extra $10/mo over that timespan to ensure I enjoy that decade as much as possible.

Yes 2500 is a lot for a dog, yes you can go to the pound for a free dog. Yes there are a million different breeds of dogs out there, some cost less some cost more. That goes for anything in life, whats your point? So you wouldn't buy a dog for 2500, some people would, and some would buy a kia.

A BMW, Mercedes or Lexus has higher performance, lower maintenance and better engineering than a cheap car. I understand those benefits.

What's a bulldog bringing to the table that justifies the price tag?
